Washington, Jul 7: In a first for the US financial markets, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq jointly rang the opening bell during a ceremony at the White House on Tuesday to mark the launch of President Donald Trump's Trump Accounts investment programme for children.
The unprecedented event brought together senior leaders from the country's two largest stock exchanges, with President Trump describing the joint ceremony as a landmark moment in the history of American capital markets.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that it was the first time the NYSE and Nasdaq had participated in a joint opening bell ceremony and also the first occasion on which the opening bell had been rung from the Oval Office.

Calling the event a significant achievement, Trump praised the collaboration between the two long-time rivals and commended their leadership for coming together for a common initiative.
He said the ceremony demonstrated that even competing institutions could cooperate for a larger national purpose and expressed hope that such collaboration would continue in the future.
NYSE President Lynn Martin said the initiative would help introduce younger generations to investing and provide them with an opportunity to participate in the country's long-term economic growth.
She also highlighted the historic role of the New York Stock Exchange in the development of the American financial system and expressed confidence in the nation's economic future.
Nasdaq Chair and Chief Executive Officer Adena Friedman described the occasion as a rare display of unity between the two exchanges.
She said the US capital markets remain a key driver of the country's economy and added that the Trump Accounts programme would give future generations an opportunity to benefit from America's economic prosperity.
Jeff Sprecher, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the NYSE, called the event historically significant, saying it reflected efforts to broaden access to the nation's capital markets.
President Trump also underscored the symbolic importance of the joint ceremony, expressing hope that it would not be the last collaboration between the two exchanges.
The opening bell traditionally marks the start of daily trading on US stock exchanges and is regarded as one of the most recognisable traditions on Wall Street. Although both the NYSE and Nasdaq regularly host separate bell-ringing ceremonies featuring business leaders, public officials and prominent personalities, Tuesday's event marked the first time the two rival exchanges conducted the ceremony together.
