Mangaluru, July 9: The Karnataka High Court has quashed the First Information Report (FIR) registered against BJP MLA Vedavyas Kamath, who represents the Mangaluru City South constituency, and others over allegations of assaulting a Congress worker during a religious programme at the Sri Krishna Bhajana Mandir in Shaktinagar, Mangaluru.
The case had been registered at Kankanady police station in March last year following the alleged incident during the religious event. Senior advocate Arun Shyam appeared on behalf of Kamath and argued the matter before the High Court.
The High Court, in its order delivered on Thursday, July 9, set aside the FIR filed against Kamath and the other accused in the case.

Responding to the verdict, Kamath described the case as politically motivated and welcomed the ruling as a vindication. "This was a false case, politically motivated and filed with malicious intent. The judgment delivered by the High Court is a victory for justice. Ever since the Congress government came to power in the state, a series of false cases have been registered against several BJP MLAs and party workers, including myself. However, this judgment has once again proved that falsehood cannot prevail for long."
While the High Court has quashed the FIR, the order does not specify the legal grounds on which the court arrived at its decision.
The ruling brings to an end criminal proceedings initiated against the BJP legislator and the other accused in connection with the alleged assault case.
