Mangaluru: Temporary bus shelter at Thokottu raises safety concerns amid monsoon

Mangaluru, Jul 12: A temporary bus shelter erected at Thokottu has come under heavy criticism, with commuters and local residents expressing severe concern over the safety of passengers during the ongoing monsoon season.

Although road repair works in the area were completed months ago, a permanent bus shelter has not yet been constructed. Instead, commuters are forced to wait under a makeshift green shamiana supported by iron poles and fitted with plastic chairs.

With the monsoon in full swing, residents fear the temporary structure may not withstand heavy rain and strong winds. They warned that if the iron poles or tarpaulin sheets collapse, it could endanger the lives of passengers, including school children, senior citizens, and daily commuters.

The issue has also sparked political criticism as the bus stop is located in the assembly constituency of a sitting state minister. Locals questioned why a permanent bus shelter has still not been provided despite repeated demands.

Residents have urged the gram panchayat and the authorities concerned to immediately replace the temporary structure with a permanent, concrete bus shelter to ensure the safety and convenience of the public.
