Bareilly, Jul 15: A woman has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district for allegedly posing as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer to marry a man and later demanding Rs 40 lakh from him, police said.

The accused, identified as Sadhana, was arrested on Monday and remanded to judicial custody. The case was registered on a complaint filed by her husband, Abhishek, who alleged that she and her family deceived him by portraying her as an IAS officer through fake photographs and videos posted on social media.

According to the complaint, Abhishek married Sadhana believing she was an IAS officer. However, after the marriage, her behaviour allegedly changed and she attempted to strangle him, threatened him and his family, and demanded Rs 40 lakh.

During interrogation, Sadhana allegedly admitted to uploading edited photographs and videos on Facebook falsely depicting herself as an IAS officer to gain the confidence of Abhishek and his family.

Superintendent of Police (South) Anshika Verma said an FIR has been registered at Faridpur police station against Sadhana, her father Narendra Pal Singh, brother Surya Pratap and maternal uncle Rajendra Singh, all residents of Budaun district.

Police said Sadhana also confessed to demanding Rs 40 lakh from her husband and asking him to sell his agricultural land to fund the construction of a hospital on a plot owned by her in Budaun.
According to investigators, Sadhana told police she is a BSc graduate preparing for competitive government examinations and that her father is a farmer. She also allegedly admitted to assaulting her husband during a domestic dispute.
