New Delhi, Jul 17: Senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar on Friday assumed charge as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, succeeding Satish Golcha, who was relieved from the post before completing his scheduled tenure.

A 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Kumar was serving as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) before being appointed to head the Delhi Police. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said his appointment was approved by the competent authority and he would continue in the post until further orders.

As per the official notification, Anurag Kumar took charge of the office of Delhi Police Commissioner from Friday. The MHA order stated that Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, would report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for his next assignment after Kumar assumed charge.

Golcha’s tenure as Delhi Police Commissioner was originally expected to continue until 2027. However, he was removed from the position ahead of the completion of his term.

Anurag Kumar brings with him extensive experience in policing and intelligence operations. Before joining the Intelligence Bureau, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in various districts of Delhi Police, handling important law and order responsibilities.

A Bachelor of Engineering graduate, Kumar later moved to the IB, where he held key positions related to internal security and intelligence matters. His service has been recognised with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016.

Known for his expertise in strategic planning, security management and intelligence operations, Kumar’s appointment comes amid a broader administrative restructuring within the Delhi Police.

Earlier this year, Delhi Police witnessed a major reshuffle on March 3, with around 70 officers, including 50 IPS officers and 20 DANIPS officers, transferred to new assignments. The reshuffle included senior-level postings involving Special Commissioners, Joint Commissioners, Additional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of Police across various wings, including crime, traffic, security and district policing.
