Jaago Mangalore Association's Mass Protest Against Bad Roads Gains Momentum

Media Release

Mangalore, Mar 21: The call by Jaago Mangalore Association for protest against bad roads on Friday March 23 at 6 pm in the form of mass honking has been steadily gaining momentum with several voluntary organizations and professional bodies such as DK Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union, DK Bus Operators' Association, Kanara Bus Owners' Association, City Bus Owners' Association, Quarry and Stone Crushers' Association, Lions Clubs, Jaycees, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike pledging support.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike DK chief Dr Annayya Kulal has said his organization has selected the junction outside Bharath Mall as the venue for staging its protest.

“We have always supported peaceful struggle for developmental purposes and whenever there is a good cause we should support each other. The issue of bad roads taken up by Jaago Mangalore Association under the leadership of Vijaynath Shetty is very timely and relevant as the citizens have been suffering for a long time,” Kulal has said.

Similarly, Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) under the leadership of Ashok Kumar Shetty and Suresh Shetty too have been forthright in their support. According to Vishnumurthy of DK Auto Rickshaw Drivers Union and Jayarama Sheka of City Bus Owners Association, over 6000 public transport vehicles like rickshaws, truck and buses, taxis etc are expected to throw their weight behind the campaign as it addresses their common cause. Ivan D’souza, president of Mangalore Mahanagara Autorickshaw Chalakara Sangha, Mangalore Karmikara Parishat Bus Naukarara Sangha, Tempo Chalaka Malakara Sangha and DK Talehore Karmikara Sangha, has issued a statement expressing full support for the campaign and said the organizations that he leads would participate in the protest.

Vijaynath Shetty, the chief co-ordinator of the protest has said the organizers have been receiving deluge of SMS and e-mail messages of support from public to its numbers 8884659777, 8884642777 and e-mail IDs hornokplease23@gmail.com, hornokplease23@yahoo.com.

“So far we have received thousands of messages and we are confident of the success of our campaign to put the problem of bad roads on the top of the administrative agenda,” he says.

“We feel encouraged that our message has fallen on the right ears as the authorities have already initiated many remedial measures to repair bad roads, especially the repair of Bolechar Bridge near Mijar, which we have been highlighting in our campaign. This is very good news and I am told the repair work of the dilapidated road near Yedapadav leading to Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple too will be taken up soon,” he adds.

Unique 5-Minute Protest

The campaign will be held in two places - Entire Mangalore city and nearby places, and Yedapadav Junction.

Jaago Mangalore Association has conceived of a unique 5-minute protest to highlight the issue of bad roads without disrupting public life. The protest calls for all citizens to stop their vehicles on the main road on 23rd March at 6 pm and honk continuously for just 5 minutes to show their voice again against the failure of the authorities and the existing administrative system to deliver and maintain quality roads for the use of the taxpaying citizens. The protest will last only for maximum 5 minutes without disturbing public life and free movement of vehicular traffic will commence immediately after the stipulated 5 minutes.

Separate Protest at Yedapadav Junction

A separate protest is planned at Yedapadavu Junction and the public are requested to assemble at Mijar near Bolechar Bridge at 5 pm, when a protest march will begin to move towards Yedapadavu Junction and a road blockade will be held at Yedapadavu junction at 6 pm for half hour after which free movement of traffic will commence. According to Vijaynath Shetty, preparations are going on in full swing in Yedapadavu to accommodate the protest.

“Our campaign is mainly against the archaic administrative practices, needless bureaucracy and red tape and not against any individuals or the government as a whole,” explains Vijaynath Shetty, “Indian economy is today very robust and government has enough and more money. At the same time there are very competent officers who can do a good job if they are given a free hand. Unfortunately we cannot reap the advantages of the economic progress achieved by globalization as we have a redundant administrative system which delays response and retards growth. Through our campaign against bad roads, we want to impress upon the need to realign the administrative machinery to become more proactive and responsive to the needs of the people and the reality of our times.”

Best way to get the work done is not form Jaago Mangalore Assn.Instead aggrived should sit in dharana in front of respective MLAs,Corporators of the area. Then only they will come to senses.Mild ways of protests will not yeild any result but a waste.

Jaago Mangalore Association, I fully support your mass protest. The roads are fit for donkeys and cattle to move. How can vehicles ply on these roads. From the pictures I see some fly overs are being built next to the uneven roads and some vehicles being driven.

I hope this motive by fellow mangaloreans in good spirit. Only the possibility of getting good infrastructure to m/lore city and surrounding areas is to get a military rule there. Because Govt. at center or state doesnt have time for major problems like roads development as they are riding high with new scams each day.

One of the roads under Bajpe panchayat almost for 40 years is not maintained by the Panchayat. It is a mud road of about one k.m. Residents of this area constantly requested the local administration in almost all ward meeting, gramasabha and also requested almost all elected representatives for asphalting this road since these years. We have also requested Zilla Panchayat to look into the matter. But it was asphalted about 100ft, then 100ft left blank, then 20ft asphalted, then 100ft left blank, then 100ft asphalted, two years back! This pattern of asphalting is surprising because where asphalting is a must is left blank! These things have been brought to the knowledge of the concerned officers but there is no action. It is dangerous to run the vehicles in this road and during any emergency this road can not be used. These authorities have not taken any proper steps to mitigate the hardship of the tax payers for these long years. Anybody is listening?

Sometimes I feel that our CM DVS should make a diviation from his plans of funding Mandirs, mutts, samudaya bhavans,Haj bhavans,CDC, etc as one time measure and divert the same to road repairs in entire Karnataka so that people using the roads/commuters by vehicles SMILE LIKE HIM.

Please see to it that the auto drivers, bus drivers, lorry drivers follow rules, then please fight for good roads, the drivers assume that they own the roads. Before we have some more deaths on the roads of Mangalore.

Hi, We are from Balikaashram Rd, Kankanady. We have not one BUT TWO CORPORATORS & both are useless. In Oct 2011 we held a meeting with them & they assured that the road will be repaired in Nov end, till now no action is taken. They blame the ruling party, contractors, PWD etc. Now one more mega apts will be launched in the area. Now they will inform that let the construction get over, then we can decide. God Save us!!!!! Can we HONK near the corporators house.

Whoa! Just what I wanted to do always while in Mangalore. Those days I wished everybody would just park their vehicles on the middle of the road and leave home on foot to express displeasure on the quality of the roads.
I shall look forward to the mass honking on the 23rd of March. Hats off to all those who took this initiative. One cant blame the contractors either since on every sanction of funds of work completed, the top brass has to have a percentage, so naturally how can the citizens expect the roads to be of good quality , while part of the funds ends up in the top brass's stomach, a little in the contractors as also every year one has to digest the tax payers hiked funds you see. The chain goes on.....

I hope the protest by the JMA will atleast awaken the concerned authorities about the pathetic condition of Roads in Mangalore / SK. I am sure funds were earmarked for the improvement of the Roads, but as can be seen from the pix of Roads and Flyovers, the money has obviously been pocketed by every one down the line. There is just one Comment on this article that concerns all of us, whereas an article that has releigious or Polictical conotations is bomabrded by comments - some of which smack of racial / relegious hatred .. so much for our priorities. Wake up dear Mangaloreans !!!!!!

I suggest all the vehicle owners to form into small groups, at least 15-30 minutes before 6 pm near a pot-hole or worst part of any road near your location.
Exactly at 6 pm we all will honk for 5 minutes with the engine on or the battery may go down.
If you can, get a national flag and raise it above your vehicle while honking.
Another innovative idea, display a message placard on the rear screen or tail end of your vehicle.

The member of different Vehicle Association should take signature from the public in a mass petition and submit them to our MP Nalin Kumar and the Minister-in-charge plus a copy each to the Deputy Commissioner, RTO Commissioner and Commissioner of Police.
    Jai Hind!
