Udupi, Feb 11: Dian Pinto, a 47-year-old resident of Mukamar parish, is currently undergoing treatment at A J Hospital & Research Centre, Mangaluru, for stage IV adenocarcinoma lung cancer. His medical team has recommended 12 doses of chemotherapy (Inj. ENHERTU), each costing Rs 4.8 lac, amounting to Rs 57.6 lac. Additionally, hospitalization expenses of Rs 1.2 lac and other associated costs, including travel and medication, bring the total financial burden to Rs 60 lac.
Dian, the sole breadwinner of his family, has been unable to work for the past 14 months due to his illness. His two young children, a 12-year-old son in 7th grade and a 7-year-old daughter in 1st grade, depend on him. His wife, who cultivates jasmine on a small plot of land, struggles to make ends meet. Adding to their financial strain, Dian must also repay a bank loan of Rs 24,617 per month for the next 11 years, which he had taken to purchase land and build a house.
Despite owning 23 cents of ancestral land, the family has been unable to sell it, leaving them in a desperate situation.
