Chennai, Aug 19: Kiran Kumar's extraordinary journey from a financially struggling class 5 dropout to the head of a massive business empire is capturing national attention as his company, Lalithaa Jewellery Mart, prepares for its much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO).
With the IPO price band fixed at Rs 190 to Rs 201 per share, the retail jewellery chain is valued at a staggering Rs 11,250 crore at the upper end. This milestone brings Kumar's three-decade-long entrepreneurial journey into the spotlight.

Born as the eighth child in a financially weak family in Nellore, Kumar experienced severe poverty during his childhood. With his father struggling to support the large family on an accountant's income, Kumar was forced to drop out of school in the fifth standard. At the tender age of 12, he entered the jewellery trade in Nellore.
Realising that local jewellery was being supplied to bigger markets like Chennai and Hyderabad, the young boy saw a lucrative opportunity but lacked the capital to start. In a life-changing gesture, his mother gave him four gold bangles, weighing around 48 grams. Kumar had these melted and crafted into six earrings, which he took to Chennai to sell.
His breakthrough came late one night at a store in T Nagar, where he met M S Kandaswamy Pillai, proprietor of Lalitha Jewellery. Impressed by the quality, Pillai placed an initial order for 100 grams, which soon doubled. Kumar subsequently built a thriving wholesale business, travelling extensively in state-run buses to supply jewellers across Andhra Pradesh and eventually exporting to international markets like London, Singapore, and Dubai.
The pivotal moment in his career arrived on February 24, 1999. When Kandaswamy Pillai found himself in severe financial distress, Kumar stepped in. Instead of letting the iconic store close down, he took over the business, settled its debts, and rebranded it by adding an extra 'a' to form Lalithaa Jewellery.
This acquisition marked Kumar's transition from wholesale to retail. Understanding the consumer mindset, he built the brand on a foundation of competitive, transparent pricing. By eliminating hidden costs, promoting BIS-hallmarked gold, and adopting a low-margin, high-volume model, he revolutionised the retail jewellery space. His bold marketing campaigns even challenged customers to compare his prices with other showrooms before making a purchase.
Today, the brand boasts 61 stores across 51 cities in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Puducherry, supported by its own manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu.
The company's financial growth reflects its massive success. Lalithaa Jewellery's revenue surged from Rs 16,800.62 crore in FY24 to Rs 25,039.80 crore in FY26. Similarly, its profit after tax jumped from Rs 359.83 crore in FY24 to Rs 1,009.82 crore in FY26.
Starting with just four gold bangles, Kiran Kumar's sheer determination and sharp business acumen have successfully transformed a small venture into a Rs 11,000 crore retail titan.
