Why do female mosquitoes bite? The surprising reason behind blood meals

Mumbai, Aug 20: Mosquitoes are a common nuisance, particularly during the rainy season, but their habit of biting humans serves a specific biological purpose. Contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes do not depend on blood as their primary source of food.

Both male and female mosquitoes mainly feed on nectar and other sugary plant liquids for energy. It is the female mosquito that seeks a blood meal, primarily because she needs additional nutrients to develop her eggs.

A blood meal provides female mosquitoes with proteins and other nutrients required for egg development. After feeding, the mosquito uses these nutrients to mature a batch of eggs, which are later laid in suitable locations, often in or around stagnant water.

Male mosquitoes do not feed on blood. They survive mainly on nectar and other plant-based sugary substances. Since males do not produce eggs, they do not require the additional nutrients provided by a blood meal.

When a female mosquito bites, it inserts its mouthparts into the skin and releases saliva. The saliva contains substances that help prevent blood from clotting while the mosquito feeds.

The human immune system reacts to proteins present in the mosquito's saliva, causing the familiar redness, swelling and itching around the bite.

No. Depending on the species, mosquitoes may feed on the blood of humans, birds, livestock and other animals. Different mosquito species have different feeding preferences, which also influences the diseases they can transmit.

Blood is therefore not essential for a mosquito's survival. Female mosquitoes can obtain energy from sugary substances, but a blood meal provides the nutrients they need for successful egg production.

So, the next time a mosquito buzzes around you, remember that a female mosquito may not be looking for a meal for herself. She is seeking the nutrients needed to reproduce and begin the next generation.
