Chennai, Sep 7: Proceedings in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly were disrupted following a heated exchange between the ruling party and opposition over the state's law and order situation, women's safety and allegations of corruption involving the previous government.

The ruling side stressed its governance priorities and maintained that freedom of speech could not be used as a pretext to disrespect women. It also referred to findings of earlier inquiry commissions and reports of the Enforcement Directorate concerning alleged irregularities in municipal tenders and revenues of state-run corporations.

The remarks triggered strong protests from opposition legislators, who demanded that Leader of the Opposition be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations on the floor of the House.

As the opposition members continued their protests and entered the well of the Assembly, Speaker declined permission for the Leader of the Opposition to speak, citing the disorder in the House.

Opposition members subsequently staged a walkout from the Assembly in protest against the Speaker's decision.

Despite the disruption, legislative business continued, with the House taking up scheduled departmental discussions and demands for grants for various departments.

The confrontation added to tensions in the Assembly, with the opposition accusing the ruling side of avoiding a proper debate, while the government maintained that allegations concerning governance and past administrations could be raised during legislative proceedings.
