Mangaluru, Oct 24: Urwa police have arrested a 42-year-old man in connection with an alleged conspiracy to extort money and property from a woman by making serious false accusations, including murder, and tarnishing her family's reputation in public.

According to a police statement, Maya Annamarie Rego lodged a complaint at Urwa police station on August 10, 2026, seeking action against those allegedly involved in the conspiracy. She alleged that false and serious murder accusations were being used as part of a plot to extort money and property and bring disrepute to her family in public.

Based on the complaint, Urwa police registered a case under Crime No. 83/2026, invoking Sections 61(a)(1) and 308(7) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

As the investigation progressed, police examined the available evidence and arrested Naveen Thores, 42, son of Joseph Thores, a resident of Ganamajal, Padavu, Shaktinagar, Mangaluru, on October 23, 2026.

He was produced before the court on October 24, following which he was remanded to judicial custody.

Police said the investigation is continuing, with further inquiries planned into the alleged involvement of other accused in the case. A detailed investigation will be conducted, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, the statement added.
