Gondia, Sep 8: At least six labourers were killed and seven others seriously injured after a speeding truck collided head-on with a Bolero near Nagra village on the Gondia-Balaghat road in Maharashtra on Tuesday.
The victims were labourers from Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh who were travelling to Hyderabad in Telangana in search of work. The accident occurred near Nagra, around five kilometres from Gondia city.
According to police, the workers from villages in the Kirnapur and Lanji tehsil areas of Balaghat district had left for Hyderabad along with their families in a Bolero bearing registration number MP-15 T 3495.
The vehicle was travelling towards Gondia when a truck bearing registration number MH-35 AJ-2547, coming from the opposite direction, allegedly rammed into it at high speed.
The impact was so severe that the Bolero was completely mangled, leaving several occupants trapped inside. Six people died in the accident, while seven others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Reports said some of the injured were in critical condition.
Hearing the loud sound of the collision, nearby villagers and passersby rushed to the spot and began helping the victims. Gondia Rural Police also reached the scene and launched rescue operations.
The bodies and injured were pulled out of the wreckage and taken to the district hospital. Gas cutters were used to remove the bodies trapped inside the mangled vehicle.
Based on the statement of injured passenger Rajendra Shivcharan Pandhare, a resident of Pipalgaon Khurd in Kirnapur, Balaghat district, Gondia Rural Police registered Crime No. 527/2026 against truck driver Mohsin Khan, 32, a resident of Gondia.
Police have booked the driver under Sections 281, 106(1), 125(a) and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Under the guidance of Police Inspector Vaibhav Pawar, Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Varsha Naitam is conducting further investigation into the case.
