Mangalore, Mar 29: A biogas plant installed jointly by Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) and Rotary Club of Mangalore, was inaugurated at Father Muller Medical College and Hospital (FMMCH) premises here on Thursday March 29 by deputy commissioner Dr Channappa Gowda.
Speaking after inaugurating the plant, the DC said that the biogas technology should be utilized by hotels to manage their waste on a daily basis.
He pointed out that Dakshina Kannada district had recently won the Nirmal Gram national award for its successful waste management, and assured that the efforts will continue with the cooperation of MCC. "We will show other states that we can produce wealth out of waste," he added.
Zilla panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayprakash, who was the guest of honour on the occasion, said that biogas will be used in the future for street lights, and that it is already in use in Akshara Dasoha schools.
FMCI administrator Fr Richard Coelho thanked Rotary Club for its support and help at a crucial time whe the plant was facing technical problems. He also spoke on the advantages of biogas plants in conserving environment.
Project convener Prasad Kalbavi introduced the plant to the audience.
The plant has been set up at a cost of Rs 5 lac. It is capable of producing 14 kg of biogas from 300 kg of garbage, using electricity worth Rs 60 per day.
