Karkala: Book on 'Birds of Southern Coastal Karnataka' Released

Karkala, Mar 31: Sandhya S Pai, the managing editor of the 'Taranga’ – a well-known weekly Magazine of Karnataka, released the book on ‘'Birds of Southern Coastal Karnataka' written by noted environmentalist and academician DrK Prabhakar Achar and a well-known wildlife photographer and bird watcher Shivashankar. 

After releasing the book, she said that birds are the good indicators of the health of the environment. It is sad to observe that in recent years many species of birds are disappearing from township and cities mainly due to changed human lifestyles and building designs and also mobile towers in particular have largely contributed to the decline in the bird population, especially the house sparrows. She complimented the authors for bringing out a very informative and beautiful bird book.

Dr Arunachalam Kumar, the dean of K S Hegde Medical Academy, introduced the book and said that any product resulting out of a combination of exceptional talents is bound to be perfect so it is with this book. The culmination of lifelong passion, this bilingual volume on the avifauna of coastal and hinterland Karnataka, is harbinger of sorts in that it reaches out to all section of the populace, bridging and spanning the gaps between illiterate and learned, armature and ace, the local and outlander. Through its vivid colour photographs it tutors the unschooled, through its Kannada notation it teaches the native and via its English text tutelage's the expatriates.

Dr K P Achar while responding on behalf of the authors narrated the experience in producing this wonderful and educative book, and also said that bird watching is gaining the momentum as an educational and satisfying pastime.

The recitation of poems on birds of well-known Kannada poets by the classic singer Chandrshekar Kedilaya marked the beginning of the programme.

Dr K P Achar and Shivashankar were felicitated on the occasion by the honourable guests, in the recognition of their splendid work on bird book.

Prof M Ramachandra, the icon of Karkala Sahithya Sangha introduced the guests and delivered the welcome address.  Dr S Devidas Nayak compered the programme and Ishwar Mangala proposed the vote of thanks.
