Bangalore: A R Infant Appointed as DGP in Karnataka

Bangalore, Mar 3 (PTI): A day after Karnataka High Court struck down appointment of Shankar Bidari as DGP and IG and his empanelment and consequent appointment as 'null and void', the state government today appointed A R Infant in his place.

The court, in its verdict yesterday had struck down Bidari's appointment as state DGP and IG for alleged atrocities committed by the STF led by him during the hunt to nab forest brigand Veerappan.

It had dismissed as "without merit and substance", petitions by the government and Bidari, challenging the Central Administrative Tribunal order and held his empanelment by UPSC and consequent appointment as "void and illegal" and upheld the CAT verdict.

The court had also directed the government should relieve Bidari forthwith and appoint A R Infant in his place.

Infant was DGP Fire and emergency Services before his present appointment.

Earlier Home Minister R Ashoka had said Infant would be appointed to the post, saying Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda had a meeting with senior officers, after which it was decided to give charge to A R Infant as DGP.

He also said the government would move the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict, as it has to protect the interests of the state.

"Since the appointment of the DGP comes under the state government, we have told our Advocate General to appeal in Supreme Court", Asoka said.

The judicial language for a high ranking DGP was very unfortunate. He should be given a dignified farewell and the judicial record should expunge the Saddam/Gaddafi word from it.

Ultimately, judiciary in India is proved as free from bias i.e INDEPENDENT. In the mean time, I would like to congratulate Mr. Shankar Bidari for extending high respect to judicial system. This has made him a natural twinkling star among of police officers and became an ideal for others. As a police officer, his worthy services are ever appreciated. Also congratulating and good luck to Mr.A.R.Infant as IG DGP.

It is sad that an extremely gallant officer is being made fun of. I definitely do not agree with the court's description of Mr Bidari as Gaddafi and Saddam. Unfortunately the fault also lies with Mr Bidari, for surrendering his self respect and honour to the BJP politicians to gain the positions of the Bangalore Police Commissioner and then DGP.

He should have waited for these positions to come to him instead of compromising himself. Mr Infant could have been the DGP and then Mr Bidari could have taken over, even though for a short while. Today look at his fate?. I feel very sorry for him. Many comments against him are uncalled for and these people should not forget his long and illustrious career and his gallant service to the people of Karnataka.

Mr.Krishna India, fair enough balanced observations.Initially we are of the opinion that the term SADDAM/GADDAFI were used by Court as Media underlined it.However, the terms of references are initiated by Shanker Bidri himself which forced Judges to counter with added seasonings.

Shanker Bidri, himself argued rather than appointing advocates which might or overconfidence brought these kind of unwanted terms/scenes.

Yes, appointing DG/IGP,a important task certainly rest with State Govt but while doing this, govt must be cautious and fair.

Under what circumstances all these strictures and criticism cropped up is important.State Govt grossly failed to apprise and convince CAT/HC the necessity of S.Bidri's service to State Govt as Security Chief. What A.R.INFANT contended was ,S.Bidri and State Govt conceived vital information relating to S.Bidri while appointing DGP/IG, undermining A.R INFANT's service record and seniority. As a matter of fact S.Bidri's elevation to the coveted post was due to 'KAANADA KAI's influence (EXACTLY YEDDY's)which CAT/HC might noted down to overrule state Govt's arbitrary appointment.

It highly unfair to pass lose comments about Mr Bidari. Perhaps majority of the people were not aware of the Human rights violation charges against Mr Bidari till the recent High court judgement. Justice AJ Sadashiva, a former Karnataka high court judge is investing the case of Human right violation by the STF team during Verrapan nabbing period. The commission has just submitted interim report not the final report.
Mostly the enquiry commission reports are based on testimony and politically biased.
Notorious criminal Veerappan was responsible for brutal murder of 79 police officers over two decades and around 120 innocent civilians were the victims of his heinous crime. The STF was facing one of the dangerous, and toughest war against a deadly poacher. In this situation it is easy preach so called ‘Human rights’
The social activist who preach Human rights should have joined the STF force to nab Veerappan and killed him or arrested him maintaining all the Human rights.
Mr Bidari deserves all the respect for his wonderful service as a STF Chief. It is perfectly alright if he has been denied DGP post because of the seniority issue. Comparing him to Saddam Husain or Gaddafi is a disrespect to Police morality and insult to 79 Police force who have laid their life in an attempt to nab Veerappan.

Infant is a Kasargod born Kannadiga. If he had moved to cochin or tiruvanthaparam he would not have reached this position. Because your state does not have single good college. He moved to his own motherland Karnataka and became DGP today.

We Mangaloreans are very proud of him today.

Your people does not know anything except opening tea shops in road corner.

Soon we will take Kasargod to our state. Because of your regular strikes our people in Kasaragod are suffering. You people are masters in pelting stones, attacking buses, vandalizing public properties, ransacking offices.. This is your education level.

It’s become a passion for all high level IPS, IAS & IFS Officers to go to court while their name has been not considered by respective State Government for Top Post. People always talk about their seniority but when it comes to front line battle with any bandits or naxalites they will stay back by excusing their old age. Bidari fought with courage against Bandit Veerappan but this shameless and merciless Human Rights Association always sideline with culprits only. When State Government decides to appeal in Supreme Court means they do not have faith with new DGP A R Infant too. We never heard his name before for his any courageous actions till date still he himself says he is more eligible than Bidari. I believe he has some rivalry with Bidari to settle some old score

Kudos to you Mr. Infant who have indeed earned this creditable position - by honest and hard work. I have had the pleasure of knowing several police officers and very particularly Mr. Achutha Rao a person of name and fame who has rendered excellent services to the department of law and order through his commendable services. I have also known very well good officers like Francis Colaco and Brian Albuquerque. I am proud to say that I know of the excellent services rendered by officers like Ashit Mohan Prasad, Kamal Pant, Alok Mohan, Pratap Reddy, Seemanth Kumar and others.

It is my hope that I will have the pleasure of meeting Infant too during his tenure in The State.

Congrats To ABDUL RAHIMAN INFANT,for being installed under the strict order of HC as DGP/IG Govt of Karnataka. Finally truth and democracy prevailed over politics and partisan appointment over the issue.

Having said that BJP govt either inexperienced or incompetent in dealing with sensational issue like Appointment of DGP/IG.Govt should honor judiciary's verdict with folded hand because if Govt not willing, who will honor? This is really unfortunate that the attitude of adamant of State Govt over the key issue with judiciary is uncalled for and not conducive for democratic parliamentary type of set up.Any way another slap from SC is in waiting !!!!!!
