New Delhi, Oct 2: High blood pressure can develop without noticeable symptoms and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. According to the World Health Federation, it is the leading single risk factor for death globally and contributes to around half of deaths linked to heart disease and stroke.
In India, high blood pressure is associated with around 1.6 million deaths every year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

For those monitoring their blood pressure at home, doctors recommend taking a few precautions to ensure the readings are as accurate as possible.
Neurologist and general physician Dr Priyanka Sehrawat, in an Instagram video shared on September 6, advised waiting at least 30 minutes before checking blood pressure if you have exercised, gone for a walk, eaten a meal, consumed caffeine or tea, smoked or consumed alcohol.
Taking a reading immediately after these activities may affect the measurement and may not provide an accurate picture of blood pressure.
Dr Sehrawat also recommended measuring blood pressure on the left arm and taking three readings rather than relying on a single measurement. The average of the three readings can provide a more reliable estimate, she said.
The blood pressure cuff should be positioned at heart level while taking the measurement. The cuff should also fit snugly around the arm without being excessively tight.
According to Dr Sehrawat, the cuff should be tight enough to allow two fingers to be comfortably inserted underneath it.
Following these simple steps while checking blood pressure at home can help ensure more consistent and reliable readings.
