Mangaluru, Oct 9: An unusual case has come to light in Mangaluru following allegations that a daughter murdered her father over property and hurriedly performed his last rites without a post-mortem examination. Police have initiated steps to exhume the body of the man, who died under suspicious circumstances around two months ago, for forensic science laboratory (FSL) examination.

Albert Rego, a resident of First Cross, Kottara, Mangaluru, reportedly died under suspicious circumstances on July 19. According to the complaint, his daughter, Maya Rego, who was living with him, allegedly performed his last rites with the assistance of close associates without conducting a post-mortem examination and without providing adequate information about his death to other family members and local residents.

Suspecting foul play, Albert Rego’s friend, Harold Pereira, lodged a complaint at Urwa police station. A case has been registered against Maya Rego and others.

The complaint alleges that Albert Rego was pressured to transfer his property into his daughter’s name and was subjected to harassment. It further alleges that he was murdered over financial matters with the assistance of others. The complaint also raises allegations regarding the involvement of a doctor and a police personnel in the case.

Albert Rego had reportedly worked abroad in the past and accumulated property. His other two children live in different places, while one daughter lived with him. According to the complainant, Albert had confided in his friends about the harassment allegedly inflicted by his daughter and the difficulties he faced over property-related matters.

After registering the complaint, Urwa police began investigating various aspects of the case. They have now initiated steps to exhume Albert Rego’s body from the burial ground on the premises of Derebail Church, near Kuntikana, for scientific examination.

FSL experts and police personnel have arrived at the site, and the buried remains are being exhumed for examination. The process is reportedly being carried out in the presence of the accused, Maya Rego, and the complainant.

The exact cause of Albert Rego’s death and the facts of the case are expected to become clear only after the FSL examination report and the police investigation are completed.
