Guntur, Oct 29: Lalitha PVS Institute of Medical Sciences organised a stroke awareness walk and public education programmes on Thursday to mark World Stroke Day, highlighting the importance of recognising warning signs, early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr P. Vijaya, senior neurologist and head of neurosciences. It included expert talks to educate the public about stroke, its risk factors and the importance of seeking emergency medical care when symptoms appear. Code stroke training was also organised for healthcare personnel to strengthen their preparedness in responding to stroke emergencies.

World Stroke Day is observed annually on October 29. The 2026 campaign by the World Stroke Organization carries the message “Every Minute Counts”, encouraging people to recognise stroke symptoms and act quickly. Its #ActFAST initiative highlights the importance of seeking emergency medical attention as soon as a stroke is suspected.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted by a blockage or bleeding, potentially causing brain cells to die. The World Health Organization stresses that stroke is a medical emergency requiring immediate assessment and treatment.

Common warning signs include sudden facial drooping, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, sudden vision changes and loss of balance. The public is advised not to ignore these symptoms or delay seeking emergency medical care, even if they appear to improve.

High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, physical inactivity and an unhealthy diet are among the factors associated with an increased risk of stroke. Regular health check-ups, appropriate management of existing medical conditions and healthier lifestyle choices can help reduce the risk.

The awareness initiative at Lalitha PVS Institute underlined the importance of educating both the public and healthcare professionals, as prompt recognition and appropriate treatment can improve outcomes for stroke patients.
