Udupi, Oct 30: Police have arrested the man who was accused of throwing acid on his house owner over a dispute regarding the return of a rental security deposit.

The arrested person has been identified as Suresh Acharya. The injured house owner, Naveen Kumar, a resident of Budnaru in Kunjibettu, is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Manipal.

Suresh Acharya was a tenant on the first floor of Naveen Kumar’s house in Vishnumurthy Nagar. He has now vacated the house and had paid a security deposit of Rs 20,000.

In his complaint, Naveen Kumar stated that Suresh Acharya had damaged the walls and taps in the rented house. He had informed the tenant that two months’ rent and the repair expenses would be deducted from the security deposit.

However, Suresh Acharya reportedly refused to accept the deduction and insisted that the entire Rs 20,000 be returned. He allegedly threatened not to let the matter go and came to Naveen Kumar’s shop, where he created a scene.

The accused subsequently threw acid at Naveen Kumar and attempted to attack him with a sword. Naveen Kumar said he managed to hide himself to escape the attack.

Naveen Kumar sustained burn injuries to his right hand, waist, abdomen, feet and face in the acid attack. Police said they have seized the items used in the crime from the accused.
