KMC Hospital Attavar hosts international training programme in HDR Brachytherapy

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 31: The Department of Radiation Oncology, Kasturba Medical College, a constituent unit of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), has successfully concluded an international training program in High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy. The programme brought together radiation oncologists and medical physicists from Mauritius for structured training in modern brachytherapy practice.

The programme was an industry–academia collaboration between Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, KMC Hospital, Attavar, and BEBIG Medical, a global provider of brachytherapy solutions. It combined the institution's academic and clinical expertise with the industry partner's technical expertise.

The department of anaesthesiology and the department of radiodiagnosis, KMC Mangalore, supported the programme.

The training covered the clinical and technical aspects of contemporary HDR brachytherapy. Participants attended interactive sessions and hands-on learning led by experienced faculty from the department of radiation oncology and the BEBIG medical team.

Key areas included:

- Principles and clinical applications of HDR brachytherapy
- Patient selection, applicator techniques and procedure workflow
- Image-guided treatment planning and dosimetry
- Quality assurance and radiation safety
- Training on brachytherapy equipment and planning systems

Brachytherapy remains a cornerstone of curative treatment for several cancers, particularly gynaecological cancers, which carry a high burden in the region. Building skilled teams of clinicians and physicists is essential to widen access to this treatment.

Programmes of this kind strengthen regional capacity and support high standards of patient care.
