Panaji, Nov 1: Goa's ongoing drive against visa overstays has resulted in the deportation of 76 foreign nationals so far this year, with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), functioning under Goa Police, continuing to monitor immigration violations across the state.

The latest cases include a Bangladeshi woman who came under the authorities' scrutiny after applying for an Indian passport. The woman, who holds a Bangladeshi passport and claimed to have married an Indian national, was identified during passport verification conducted by the Special Branch at the Margao CID Centre.

According to officials, she had overstayed her visa and failed to disclose her family details during the verification process. "FRRO has initiated deportation proceedings against her," an official told The Goan.

In another case, a Kenyan woman was traced by the FRRO in Siolim for overstaying her visa. She has been lodged at a detention centre pending deportation.

Two foreign nationals were deported in the last two days following legal proceedings. One of them was a Russian national who had entered Goa on a tourist visa but continued to stay in India beyond the permitted period.

The Russian national had also faced a case under the Motor Vehicles Act, in which the court acquitted him. However, he was convicted in the separate visa overstay case and deported on Saturday, an official said.

An Australian national who had also overstayed his visa was the second foreigner deported following court proceedings.

The latest cases underline the continued enforcement of immigration regulations by Goa Police and the FRRO, which are monitoring foreign nationals who remain in the country beyond the validity of their visas.
