Mangalore: Engineering Student Ends Life over Alleged Harassment

Mangalore: Engineering Student Ends Life over Alleged Harassment

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Update: 10.45 am

Mangalore, Apr 11: Sources in PA College of Engineering, where Mehnaz Ali, a student of second year allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday April 10, said that the reason behind her suicide was 'harassment' by the college authorities after it was found that she had gone to Goa with her friends without seeking permission from the hostel.

Last week the college had holidays for four days owing to festivals, and Mehnaz with her friends reportedly went to Goa. The college director learnt of it later through some pictures on Facebook, and reprimanded her and also informed her parents, who too reproached her, it is said. However, it is also said that the parents were aware of her Goa trip and had let her go.

It is said that the college director reprimanded her for several hours, and the girl threatened to commit suicide. Feeling mentally tortured, the girl ended her life, it is said. The matron too is said to have shouted at her the previous night.

Update: 10 pm

Mangalore, Apr 10: Following the alleged suicide of Mehnaz Ali, a student of P A College of Engineering (PACE), the angered students held an intense protest at the college campus demanding the dismissal of PACE campus director Udayan V.

Sources said that the management acted on the students' demands and dismissed the director. Only then did the students ended their protest.

Sources also said that the students damaged the college property. Police had to intervene and resort to lathi charge.

Students who assembled at K S Hegde hospital expressed their anger over not being allowed to see Mehnaaz.

Mehnaaz's parents, who stay abroad will be coming to the city on Wednesday April 11.

Earlier news:

A student of an engineeing college allegedly committed suicide here on Tuesday April 10.

The deceased has been identified as Mehnaz Ali, a second year student of PA Engineering College, Konaje near here. She was in the biotechnology batch.

She reportedly hanged herself at around 3 pm. As her room was locked, she went into another room and hanged by the ceiling fan. She was noticed entering the room, and sometime later was found hanging.

She was rushed to K S Hegde Hospital and slipped into coma, but was said to be responding to the treatment. At around 4.45 pm she breathed her last.

Though the exact reason is not yet known, sources said that alleged harassment by a lecturer in the college may have led her to take the extreme step.

Angered by the incident, students of the college have planned to organize a protest in the next few days.

A case is yet to be registered.

The College has declared a day's holiday on Wednesday April 11 to mourn her death.

The life of an upcoming engineer is not an easy one . And specially at institutes like these , where the professors and staffs are pointless at their approach . I belive there was nothing wrong that she had done . Its just the hype of all work and no play that her college's director follows and how on earth does he have a facebook account ! Isn't that a little off track to his regular approach ?! I hope her soul rests in peace . And to everyone who thinks that the management was right at its approach , lock your self in a cupboard and stay in there for atleast a week . If you find it exciting , good for you and if you don't , that's how we're supposed to live for 4 yrs in a row !

    Ms Asma,

I hope you have heard the song "Sari umar hum mar mar k ji liye, Ek pal tho ab hame jine dho" from the movie 3 idiots...After all she was a human being and every human being has his/her own desires. In the busy schedule of her profession life she wanted to take a break.. I have 2 questions

    1. would the hostel gave the permission if she would have requested for by telling the truth.

    2. The college suppose 2 protect the student but they act as if they owe them.

Plz put yourself into her shoes and thing...Afterall a precious life is gone and you dnt realize the value of it.

    Asma and munna,

You are inhuman and heartless. You dont have the right to say Mehnaz rule due to her extreme step..
And just imagine the mind set when that poor girl had to take that extreme step. With all the good words about her fromher friends its evident she was loved by all..except the management. And the comments also show how horrible college lecturers treat the students..

Instead of consoling the crying souls some are still blaming the innocent.. Is there no counselling in  college.. If it is not there they should create one exclusively for the lecturers so that they know how to treat the young budding lives.. They might make mistakes, but who does not. Only parents have the right over their kids not these lecturers. They should just do they job.. teaching their subject and thats it.

Muslim, Sikh, Hindu or christian,...first thing she is a human being. She to had emotions, soul. Now a days engineering college lecturers are so bad, that they think they are the superiors in all the matters.most of the lecturers are just passed out BE students, they do know to handle the students, just show their temperament. There shud be counselling for them. Even Engg college at Adyars lecturers are same.God only has to save these students.

The college has got no freaking rights to interfare in anyones personal life. And especially this college management doesn't know how to manage it. better just shut it down if you cant handle it. and none in this world will end up their life until they have been tearted really worst. this is not only once happened its their way of behaving with the students and this should be done. let them know it is HARAM is Islam to treat this bad. What kind of Muslims are these people? Fear Allah. you will have to anwer him in the day of judgement. May Allah Bless Mehnaaz soul, May Allah do the maghfirat of her .. Ameen

I have completed my engineering at PACE. And it is one of the best college in Mangalore district.

Every one playing blame game here..I would say weak Iman in the heart of her and lack of counsel resulted in taking such a hasty decsion. If she really fears Allah and punishment of gravesure she would not have taken such a hasty decision. Taking life of their own is not a solution at all There are many other solution which I feel she could have done :

1.If the lecturer would have tortured ( If true ?) then should have informed her guardian who might be in India ( bcos her parentd are at abroad) regarding this, and easily this matter would have been resolved.

    2. She could have quit the college and lead healthy life by joining other colleges / courses..

I heard she had threatened lecturer by saying, she will commit suicide..and also she is bold enough ..My question is :

Now everyone blaming college..for this..There are many talented came out of this college Just go and ask them, Does PA college is the best college ? Obviously 99.96% percent will say YES. No doubt in that Always best people finds an opportunity eveyrwhere...

It is saddening to know about the recent happenings at PACE.May ,the Almighty Allah forgive her sins and forgive her.Ameen. First of all, what she has done is wrong. She should not have gone to goa without informing the concerned authorities/parents.When the parents stays abroad to earn lively hood they put their child on safe hands, because they build dream on them. Then it becomes the child duty to abide by the rules of the institution wherever she/he is studying.

Of course, those who handled the case, could have done in a more responsible manner rather pinning her with words and attitudes. But it does not mean that the entire college is wrong. As far as i know, thousands of students earn their lively hood by the knowledge which is grabbed from the same college. So you must be knowing how important was those knowledge, which you gained from college. We have no right to take back god given life. In fact we should face it and march towards success , then we will have gods grace.

Youths are so irresponsible. A student of PA always knows the rules and regulations of the college. And it is the duty of them to follow. The management doesnt entertain students going for outing without permission, and if they get to know they will take the strict action. All the mistakes commited knowingly cannot be forgiven. The girl who had courage to go picnic without permission,,,cant she be face d situation after the consequence...?? dont just show the guts in breaking the laws.....

@Munna:My dear brother,Your comments cannot be agreed.
Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) , once supplicated to Allaah The Almighty to forgive a man who had committed suicide. [Muslim] An-Nawawi deduced from this Hadeeth that it is not permissible to call a person who commits suicide a disbeliever.how can you call a muslim as a nonbeliever?
Therefore, supplication for a person who commits suicide is permissible, as they are not considered a disbeliever. Such a person is under the will of Allaah The Almighty, so Allaah The Almighty will punish her if He wills, or forgive her if He wills.
    Allaah Knows best.
So let us all pray that Almighty Allah forgive this person who committed suicide and expiate her sins.

I have suffered many personal pains in life. Even though I am a soft hearted person, sometimes I
wonder, how I could hold on in life so far. It is only by the divine grace of GOD.

While attending the second year in the degree course, my mother was seriously sick and many days I was thinking and worryhing in the class that I will see her dead body when I reach home. My answer paper  had nothing other than whatever I wrote by hearing something from the teacher through my absent mind.

He read my paper in the class: some of the students laughed, some of my friends who were familiar with my personal pains felt bad. I had to stand up in the class while he was making a fool out of me-I turned red and cried loud inside.

Whenever I saw K.J. Samuel sir, I deliberately avoided him. That day I thought, I wish if I were
dead. Many teachers hurt their students in the class like a joke parade. Words are sharper than
swords and the hurts will never heal.

She was a bold and smart girl ... just because of her one mistake .. nobody has a right to point out at her entire life and that she was a bad person . the institution is defaming her and our community is so bad that they just need a topic to gossip on ... i cn only imagine the desperation and loneliness in which she commited this act .... we love u mehnaz ... suicide is never the right way . all we can do now is pray for almighty to forgive her sins and all of us should learn our lesson from this . may god give her family the strength to bear this great loss . we shall always remember you beautiful smile mehna ... we love you so much .. you shall always be in our memories .

Its a very sad incident infact. Mehnaz have done a mistake of going to Goa without seeking permission from the College authority. But, instead of shouting for this, councelled her in a proper way. She too need not ended her life in a suicide. Fact has two faces. Can't blame any one for this. Since PACE is a muslim minority Institute, majority of the Muslim families prefer their wards to be studied there in such base interrogating and reporting the students misbehaviours to the parents is must, i feel. But regarding Student - Staff relationship, Staff must be councelled properly and actions must be taken when they are found guilty.

I have lost many known people by natural deaths and accident as well but this case shocked me the most I knew her personally and the kid was a gem.she was very enthusiastic as we know people who end their life are never predictable.i know how people are and am good at judging this girl always reflected innocence a very sweet kid who loved her family just like others. On a very minor case when she was accused severely for somthing for which ahe didn't deserve she couldnt take it.. All our lives we strive to develop respect among the society n are concious about how people think about us specially sensitive kids like her on being herassed so badly she couldnt take it propably. It is majorly the fault of facaulty since i know them personally i can say this for sure. They find pride in their high paying easy jobs for which they have come all the way from other states which makes them forget their role and cross their limits to remove all the saved up daily frustation on a kid. Beleive me i hv been also in same situation by same lecturer and he wont think before his speech after loosing temper. Lecturer should be punished for whatever happend as they cannot replace a life they should make the his life suffer who was responsible for this. May allah forgive her and provide streangth to her family to come out of this shock.

Whenever a child go through a bad patch they should be discussing this with their parents and get advice as if they are very close friends. Only this can save their children. Parents and guardians or lecturers should teach the children's and students to overcome the pressure they have, and not to succumb to it. suicide is not the ultimate solution, face the situation, learn from the mistakes and live the life and one should never end his/her life like this. Dear Students
You must realise that it's 'Your Life' after all. No one else should be allowed to 'rule' or 'boss' over it. Problems are 'man maade' and are to be solved by 'mankind' only. It's your 'hand' over your 'head' ultimately. No decisions should be taken in a 'split' second and in a hurry. Like the best way they say to control anger is to count from 1 to 10.

Things change for the 'better' in a matter of minutes, it's only that you must have 'patience' to wait. Nothing is gained 'ultimately' if extreme
steps are taken in haste. Life is too 'precious' to throw it away
giving 'any' reason for that matter. Everybody you come acroos in your life is a 'traveller' like you and on his own jouirney...Remember that and carry on with your mission..
'Jab Tak Jaan Hai ..Jahaan Hai..
    All the very best.

Kindly note that, you are going to manage multinational companies in future and try to achieve positions as senior utives. may be some lecturers harass the students since they are not competent enough to hold such responsible positions. In this context it is the responsibility of the management to review/evaluate the teachers KPI and come forward with a solution. Finally I would like to comment is we should work hard in establishing a good academic background to become professionals. The management at this point of time should look at an western outlook in upgrading the system.

As a known person to the family of mehnaaz, my heart bleeds to have heard of this incident. I am sure mr.ali had left no stone unturned to give the best education to his daughters. Its painful to know such incident occuring among such good people, but Allah has his ways and plans.

Relatives and friends of the family must stay away from the typical nature of gossiping about the the reasons behind the death. After all this cud have happened to anyones daughter including yours.

i have heard similar incident which took place in pa college earlier, luckily the girl survived. That should have been a wake up call to the management, but alas!

In case college rules were broken , the campuus director allegedly humiliating and screaming the victim publicly was totally uncalled for, and he shud have informed her parents/ local guardian in a respectful manner.

College authorities must realise that not all students have the same capacity to handle certain situations.

They simply do not know how to handle certain situations regarding students, with changing times.

And may Allah forgive all and give the grieving family strength.

Innocent girl lost her life by committing suicide because of no fault of her. Students like her still not strong enough to face the true picture of hurdles of life sometime. If there was harassment like this, students should at least tell their Parents to relieve the tension they face in campus. This little wonder left heavenly abode but can their Parents bare the loss of their most beloved? Punishing the culprits under our existing law is most uncertain if he/she comes from influential family or institutes to save their reputation. Only we can pray with God to give her soul total peace and same time punish the culprit the way he deserved

Sad news. may her soul rest in Peace, I think there is a necessity for students to be more trained to be strong in order to tackle any kind of issues. Its unfortunate that students are considering this extreme steps as a solution for the problems which they face. There should be proper counselling centers in colleges with a strong student relation officer which will have the ability to resolve this kind of issues in the future.

RIP Mehnaz Ali...May allah forgive all yours sins and grant u a jannah. I request P.A. Trustee to remove all the lectures who does not have humanity.Being a 2010 passed out student of this college i know few lecturers very well about their characters, they treat students like their slaves by giving useless assignments and pressurizing to lean on their foot.

People reading this please realise 'It is only pressure that got to her'. But 'there is none you can't overcome'. Pray and calm yourselves. This is the second case I have heard in two years amongst students. There is a life beyond your troubles!! Take the blame, don't put soo many into tears. What happened from the faculty end cannot be understated, but it is also your role to sort it out. Never panic!! EVERYONE has their own problems, and we all do deal it, or atleast try. Keep her in your prayers.

It is too terrible that a lecturer
caused the death of a student: and
the lecturer is liable for his
cruel act of second degree murder.
Let GOD give peace to her family.

There are a few evil people in the
    noble teaching profession, causing
pain to the students and forcing
some of them to commit suicide,
which is a terrible reality we face
    today.

Me being a student of this college would like to state that this is murder. It is now known that mehnaaz was made to wait in the hostel for about 15 minutes after she was rescued before she was taken to hospital. I would also like to say that the management are heartless people as they are now blaming it all on her.

This is terrible as to why an Engineering College student had to end her life due to Alleged harassment. Mehnaz Ali may your soul rest in eternal peace and give comfort to your bereaved parents, relatives, friends and your college colleagues/staff. I feel sorry for Mehnaz as she should not have taken such a drastic step. She brought sorrows to everybody at her young tender age. We do not know yet the real cause for her suicide unless she wrote something before she did this.

May Allah rest her soul in peace and give strength to her parents to bear this great loss. I would like to state that management is equally responsible for not taking action on these culprits when such incidents are noticed or when kids are harrased at college. Parents living away leave their kids thinking they are in safe hands. But these harassment result in such mishaps. It is imperative that management carry out immediate checks on all the facilities in the college including the mess where I heard they sometimes serve rotten food. Management should immediately replace all males who are managing the hostels for girls and boys as well. Authorities including the university officials should conduct the interviews independently with the students to find out what's happening in the college and how they are treated while ensuring that their identity not published. It's time that strict measures are taken immediately to avoid such incidents in future.

I wonder why this young life commit suicide now-a-days. I doubt sexual blackmail and harrasement would be the first and foremost reason behind this. Lot of people cheat the innocent girls in the name of love. They take ugly blue films with the secret cameras and blackmail. Police have immediatly check all the possible documents and communication records of the victims to nab the culprits, otherwise i doubt this would continue and remain as a question mark for long.

    Very sad news indeed.
I pray to the ALMIGHTY to rest her soul in peace.
I did my B.E at Surathkal Engg College (NIT) back in 1971.
I know how much studies you will have to do do.The amount of studies puts lots of pressure on you. Even your life afterwards puts more pressure. You will have to be ready for that.
I deeply condole her death, whatever is the reason.
Have a good day all of you.
Ending a life is not an answer.
    Have a nice day

Cant understand by someone saying a protest is not essential, why when a lecturer is involved a complete investigation is a must, and he should be shamed as these things are common and many a times go unnoticed in the society need not be in Mangalore but all around, so the students protest is justified, it is easy to say for others or suggest who will bear the loss, how the parents must be going thru, may her soul rest in peace, reputution is not the issue here, these things can happen anywhere and PA engineering is not above that its still not the topest

PA college of Engineering is one of the best institutions identified. The loss of a prospective Engineer is really a sad news. A detailed justified probe into this matter to identify the root cause of death is greatly appreciated by concerned authorities. It is suggested that, possible protests by student community is not essential, since it may give room for any violence. PA Engineering College management is equally responsible not to have such incidents within the campus.

Counseling in educational institution should be made mandatory on the other I, guess globalization might be one of the reason. This particular incident should be probed and guilty should be punished for abating murder...
