Mangalore, Apr 14:
The issue of MSEZ pipeline that triggered friction between the local traditional fishermen and the MSEZ officials remained in deadlock on Saturday April 14 even after a compensation of Rs 15 lac was proposed at a meeting.

The negotiation efforts between MSEZ and the traditional fishermen held with the deputy commissioner on Saturday turned futile as the offer of Rs 15 la as compensation to the Karavali Traditional Fishermen Union was rejected by the fishermen.

Earlier in the meeting, B K Vasudeva, president of Karavali Traditional Fishermen's Union said that the shore-based fishing catch is decreasing every year, causing severe problems to traditional fishermen who have taken loan and whose lives are in a dilemma now. He pointed out that through the pipeline 1,523 micro gram of petroleum hydro carbon per liter of water is added in Kulai area as against 144 micro gram in Padubidri seashore, as per the report by the National Institute of Oceanology, Goa. Further, content of high ammonia, nitrate and cadmium mercury are causing decrease in fish catch, he said.

During the meeting, he also sought permanent compensation for affected fishermen and demanded that traditional fishing should be converted to mechanized form, for which the MSEZ should provide 60 mechanized boats.

MSEZ MD Rajeev Banga said that the pipeline alone is not the cause for decrease in the quantity of fish, and maintained that the public hearing prior to the placing of the pipeline was held according to procedures and only after the environment ministry gave the clearance certificate, the work of laying the pipeline was initiated.

However, the fishermen present during the meeting said that the Kairampani units (seashore fishing by casting nets) which were 55 earlier had now come down to mere 1 unit because of the decrease in fish caused by contamination of water in the seashore.

CEO of the Panambur Beach Tourism project Yathish Baikampady countered that the so-called public hearing prior to the placing of the pipeline was for namesake as none of the fishermen union had been invited.

DC Dr Channappa Gowda who chaired the meeting said that efforts can be made to avail compensation from the government.

During the meeting, though MSEZ offered Rs 15 lac to Karavali Traditional Fishermen Union to be disbursed among traditional fishermen as compensation amount, they (fishermen) said it would not serve the purpose. Hence, fishermen stuck to the decision of opposing the pipeline in the seashore in coming days.

MLA Krishna J Palemar who was present during the meeting represented the fishermen. ADC Dayanand was also present.

Is it the only way to discharge the waste, cant it be treated in some way so that it will not ruin the environment. I think if people bathe in this Sea water, they might get some skin disease. What is the use of compensation, see to it that it will not harm the environment. Once the pipe line is laid no one is going to check what will flow to the sea, initially they will be polite with the sweet talk it is human nature, once the things are got done they sit on the head and shit on the face. Just check the backwater rivulet near 4th Mile just before Kulur.

This was a very beautiful river when we were kids now the drainage water from Kavoor is been let into it, and the whole river is stinking whom to blame, no one can hold their Shit. All those effected are the poor farmer's livimg beside that river, who used to catch some fish for their night meal. What have the engineer's of Kavoor got to do, they are miles away and happy with their pay and job. Atleast wake up now people, we need jobs not with destruction, every thing has got a solution, but a bit expensive. If we need development we have obey the rules of the nature.

Man is the only one whos does destruction we can run cables overhead, under ground, subway's, underground parking, high rise Buildings what not, if we do not have wings to fly, we will make a machine with a lot of noise and polution, to fly we never care whether it disturbs the other beings. If some pigeons come and nest's in our buildings we will shoot and kill them for we do not want thier ings on the building's, who care's we are the master's of this world.

It should be give & take agreement between the two parties. Fishermen claim that they have huge loan pending to repay but State Government can waive their pending loan. Same time Fishermen should allow to install pipe line since it is essential for MSEZ. By offering mere 15 lacks compensation in total is nothing when it comes to distribute the same among fishermen. If it is true that emission of 1,523 micro gram of petroleum hydro carbon per liter of water means we have grave problem with this pipe line. But surprisingly our Environment Ministry duly cleared the project long ago without looking at the emission factor, whereas same Ministry created ruckus when it comes to New International Airport in Mumbai due to Mangrove Issue. For them Mangrove is more important that Human beings

Development required but not in the cost of environmental health. When local inhabitants taken for granted then it is not development but safeguarding corporate world's interest.Listen to the farmers who are backbone of the economy and nation. If the govt's decision goes on unilaterally in the MESZ/SEZ then there might a lesson for politician in waiting.
