Bangalore: Aftermath of Lecturers' Strike - CET Postponed to May 21

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Apr 18: Taking into account the delay involved in completing valuation work of PU answer papers because of the strike undertaken by valuators for four days, Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has postponed Common Entrance Test (CET).

The CET, which was scheduled to be held on May 3 and 4 earlier, stands postponed to May 21 and 22.

Executive director of KEA, Rashmi V Mahesh, had urged the government through a letter, to postpone CET, as the PU answer sheets valuation work would not be completed by then, and also because of the fact that holding of CET will be impossible as the lecturers and principals, who are expected to function as examination staff, will not be available to hold the examination as they will be busy with paper valuation. The Chief Minister, on the recommendation of the principal secretary of the department of higher education, gave his nod to the postponement on Tuesday.

Bilogy examination will be conducted from 10.30 am to 11.50 am on May 21, while the subject of examination that afternoon will be mathematics. Physics examination will be held on May 22 morning. Chemistry examination is scheduled to be held from 2.30 pm to 3.50 pm that day. Examination in Kannada for candidates from outside the state and border areas will be conducted on May 23 from 10.30 to 11.30 am.

A release by the department said that the result of CET will be published on June 6. The hall tickets of the students would be dispatched to the respective colleges/house addresses after May 11. The students can also download their hall tickets from the website, http://kea.kar.nic.in, the release added. Further, it has been informed that verification of documents will be held at 12 help centres across the state on June 13, as the process of counselling has been fully computerized. Counselling process will begin on June 20, the release stated further.

I am badly effected by this abrupt postponment of CET exams. What about COMEDK EXAMS? I have sympaty for teachers who went on strike for increase in thier pay/ fees. It seems Government took it lightly in adressing teachers genuine grevances.

My son appeared for 2nd PUC exam in 1st week of April after going through all the stress due to the saga of paper leak and is currently attending CET coaching classes in rural area. In addition to the CET exam he has to appear for COMEDK exam on 6th May, Manipal Exam on 7th May and AIEEE exam in Bangalore on 12th May. Also some of his classmate registered for AIEEE exam on 19th May in Bangalore. As the AIEEE syllabus is different he will not have enough time for preparation. Also in case of BITSAT exam which is on 21st May students enrolled for exam now will not be able to appear unless they skip CET. Change of CET exam schedule will definitely further put tremendous pressure on the students. We parents & student are at loss to know how to handle the situation.
Regarding the salary of teachers to have good education to our children it is important that the teachers are paid adequately so that they can concentrate on their teaching well. Primarily we, society and the government failed to understand that. It is very unfortunate that the teachers used (no choice?)exam paper evaluation as a bargain which is causing inconvenience to thousands of students.

State offered salary package of Rs 25,000/- to Rs 29,500/- is not at all bad for the caliber of Pre-University Teachers or Lecturers. If they still willing to go for strike, we wonder want lesson they will teach the future generation in their schools? It becomes passion for going on strike for every reason. First of all we have to fight for “RTE” even though Central Government made it Law well supported by Supreme Court too recently. Then we have to fight against School Fees hike and then our fight will continue with School Transportation too. Some people fight for or inclusion of some ive subjects in the school books. Some time Students goes on strike to postpone the annual exams and now Teachers go on strike for betterment of salary and themselves postpone the valuation of papers written by lakhs of students whereby playing with their future course of carrier ion.

As a common people, can we go for one more strike saying that “No Water,Milk,Petrol,Gas, etc” for striking teachers?
