An Indian Ends Life Every Sixth Day in Oman

Dubai, Apr 30 (PTI):
In a worrying sign, an Indian living in Oman has been found to commit suicide every sixth day, owing to financial stress or personal issues, official data shows.

23 Indians had committed suicide in different parts of the Sultanate till mid-April this year. In January and February, eight Indians committed suicide in each month, while four ended their life in March. Three people had committed suicide till mid-April, Times of Oman reported, quoting data available with Indian embassy in Muscat.

Last week, an Indian mother of three was found hanging from the ceiling at her flat in Ruwi region.

50 Indians committed suicide in Oman in the year 2010, while another 54 in 2011, the report said.

Psychologists and social workers in Oman call this an alarming phenomenon.
"Even though the number of suicides was slightly low in March and April, it was quite high in January and February," an Indian lawyer told the paper.

The reasons behind the suicides, psychologists say, are either financial stress or personal issues such as low self-esteem, depression and interpersonal conflict.

Several Indian social and spiritual groups are working in Oman to prevent the rising number of suicides.

"The reason for the high number of suicides could be the lack of someone to confide in," P M Jabir, Indian Social Club Welfare Secretary, said.

"Many of the victims are people who are living away from their families and relatives, which lead to loneliness and stress. Also, most of these people might be undergoing tremendous financial crisis in fulfilling the family obligations back home.

"To overcome all that, they seek easy methods like taking loans from private money lenders, which later turns into a death trap," he said.

A senior Indian embassy official said the mission is ready to provide help to Indians who are under stress.

"A dedicated Community Welfare Wing, headed by a senior India-based officer, caters exclusively to the needs of distressed Indian workers," A P S Chauhan, Second Secretary (Community Welfare, Culture and HOC) at the Indian Embassy, said.

Thanks Dr. Thinker on your comments are greatly valued coupled with a peace of advice Mr. Nayak.
ALL people have to come out and see the world. Within Middle East it is Multilingual, Multi nationalities working all together as a team and family. It is totally a clean life with no hassles of the corrupt government.

People enjoy life over here, it is as good as one stays in US or Europe. Each one is highly respected and proper justice is given to a common working level person. We follow a system here which is acceptable to ALL. Crime rates are zeroed down and criminals are punished as per Islamic Law. I hope if Mr. Nayak visits Middle East he will realize how things are working and he can kindly note that, about 38% of energy is supplied from Middle East. India has felt the economic warmth during the 1990 and 2003 Gulf War.

Feel we are reading too much into the report. People who have lived or even just visited Oman will agree that it is the most peaceful, beautiful, least stressful and desirable place to live in. With a total population of just 27 lakhs of which the Indian diaspora is around 4.5 lakhs, it is a small world and such incidents get a larger than life exposure. Thankfully, unlike the other Gulf nations, where such incidents never get reported, Oman is informed and aware and there are organisations which are available for those who wish to seek help.
Let us therefore not give this report any colour other than to see this as one of the maladies of this world and try ourselves to help if not let others help such people.

The total number of suicide cases in Oman in the last 10 years was 599, with 59.9 cases every year and in that the native Omanis are accounts for only 8.7 cases every year. A survey about expatriates it was found that Indians, who paid huge placement fees to recruitment agencies to work in countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), were disillusioned by actual realities in the GCC. The survey of 10,100 middle and low-income expatriate Indians in GCC countries found that only two percent of their family members actually saved something from their remittances. In many cases, expatriate Indians suffer from depression caused by loneliness and financial crises.

Sadly, even in Indian too, especially those who have more access to jobs and education than ever before, want to die? Aren’t India is supposed to be a spiritual people, content with our lot, with strong religious beliefs and a fatalistic attitude to life? Well, this philosophy, so rooted in our genes, has not protected even our simple village folks. Indian farmers are killing themselves in thousands! In fact, South India was the World's suicide capital and out of every three cases of suicide reported every 15 minutes in India one is committed by a youth in the age group of 15 to 29.
24% - self employed are the largest group who kill themselves due to financial problems and frustration.
21% - Indian housewives are the second largest group who end their life and it is due to lack of love and respect at home, dowry harassment, mental torture at the hands of in-laws, abandonment and/or sexual abuse is often the cause of despair in women.
15% - farmers form the next biggest group. India has seen a lot of farmer suicides in recent years. We may be in the throes of an economic boom, but more than 25,000 farmers have killed themselves in India, mostly by consuming pesticide since the year 1997. Debt and the resulting harassment at the hands of money lenders is a major cause.

    Dear Mr NAGESH NAYAK,
Readers of this website and myself always knew that you have poor perception of reality. You truly prove the ''Frog in the well " theory. Please go and check the facts first and stop this hypocrisy.
    1. According to statistics India has more than 5 lakh deaths in one year from accident s and unnatural deaths including suicides and that is still 10 times more than UK even if take the relative population size.(UK had about 4,000 deaths for its 70 million population )
    2. I don't think other countries have similar rates of gang rapes and brutal murders in broad day light as we have.
3.Every thing looks good from outside in our case but lot of people are suffering silently in unhappy marriages, pressure from parents to get ranks, ill treatment from children to parents, and do things due to social pressure rather than really happy to do it.
4.men spending their weekdays in bars instead of their families doesn't happen even in the west!
5.and obove all the disease called CORRUPTION embedded in the DNA of our culture which is creating so much unfairness ,injustice and misery on day to day basis.
There is a saying that ' people living in glass house s shouldn't threw stone at others ' please remember .Considering the sadistic comments you do more likely there are rotting rats in your backyard.
    Thanks for reading

due to lack of opportunities and very low salary comparing to the increased cost of living in india most of the peopel come to gulf for job,the peopel back home in india think that peopel abroad are enjoying their life and acumulating money here, but only the one who is in gulf will know his life, low educated peopel are made to work like donkeys here, also no respect, their salary is not enough to fill their stomach they eat leafy vegetabels and cubus to give everything to their family in india. sometimes stay for more than 6yrs without seeing their loved ones, loneliness,is this is a life worth living even we feel bad to see some young males and females working in low class job here, why cant our indian government open eyes to see wether indians are ok or no in gulf countries embassy is only bothering to collect fees for passport renewal or attestations nothing else they are doing,God only should solve the missery.
