Udupi, May 4: Young technocrats of the coastal district have invented a solid waste treatment plant that will efficiently treat the garbage including plastics, all generated in the limits of rural villages, at a time when the village councils were trying to reduce the plastic menace in their localities.

Young engineers Nidhish Shetty, a native of Alevoor, and Abhiman Shetty, a native of Kaup, near here, invented a garbage disposal plant for the first time in Karnataka. The live demonstration of the newly-invented garbage disposal unit was held for the first time in Belapu gram panchayat, near here, on Wednesday May 2.

The garbage disposal unit will automatically segregate the biodegradable waste and plastic and is economical to manage. It would be helpful for different gram panchayats across the district to curb the environmental pollution caused by plastic menace.

The compact plant can be placed in 30 feet x 60 feet space, which can ideally treat the garbage generated in the limits of the gram panchayats. The unit costs about Rs 5 to Rs 6 lac depending on the capacity. The model unit can treat garbage from 3 ton to 5 ton.

The unit is ideal for treating garbage generated in rural villages and has been installed for the first time in Belapu gram panchayat, near here. The innovators have plans to introduce mobile units in cities and towns across the nation.

Experimental unit makes first-run in Belapu

“The treatment of solid waste in rural villages is a major issue and it has been eased by the enterprising engineers who deserve to be appreciated. The unit has been installed with the funds from MLA’s fund, ZP fund, and village council,” said Deviprasad Shetty, president, Belapu gram panchayat.

“The village councils are facing the wrath of residents owing to inefficient management of solid waste by different gram panchayats. The unit can efficiently treat the garbage generated daily within the limits of village panchayat, with many uses. The biodegradable waste can be stored and used as manure for plants in forestry, and the plastic segregated can be recycled,” he added.

Nidhish and Abhiman are engineers who worked abroad in MNCs, but returned to their native villages to develop their innovative ideas, out of their deep interest in solving the garbage menace that has worsened rural living. Both of them secured many awards during their work life in the country and abroad.

Great work Shetty duo. Segregation and volume reduction are essential elements of waste management. Either I missed it or there was no explanation given for the pit shown in one of the photos. Is it for disposal? What is intended to do with the shredded biodegradable wastes? Will is it be used for creating manure? Drums - plastic and metal - can also be crushed to reduce volume and ease handling and storage. It is a great move. This will reflect well in the overall cost of waste management. Qudos once again.

Let's see the silver lining and congratulate these both gentlemen Abhiman Shetty & Nidhish Shetty in the first place.
Their innovative and creative talent has to be admired /congratulated first.

Yes indeed..certain extent I agree with Mr. Melwyn Prenal since we all know that plastic materials are non - degradable.
Today "Pollution" and "Global Warming" is a Central and Burning issue for the environment on our planet called "Mother Earth" for the whole world.

It's in our hands to protect or destroy for the future generations to come.

Congratulations young engineers for this innovation. Disposal of solid waste is an issue globally. Appreciate this doesn't include toxic waste. Similarly there are methods to reduce Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological oxygen demand (BOD) using Membrane Biological Reactor (MBR) technology in effluents. The MBR works fine with sanitary waste water which can be recycled back to utilize either for irrigation or drinking purposes.

Great innovation by Abhiman & Nidhish. In past i remember there were several these kind of innovative creative ideas made by Diploma & Engineering Students. In this case i am sure Muncicipal council prefer only Doddanagudde in Udupi to dump... In gulf thermal technology used to crush the dumping waste.........

Invention and the concept of disposal of wastage is very nice. Hats off to these technocrats. But, crushing the plastic bottles/ other things is not a permanent solution for the environment pollution. Since, plastics are non - degradable, they will be polluting our earth even after crushing. So, we need a plant which can destroy these crushed plastics without polluting the environment. degradable waste need not be crushed it will get destroy by itself in few days or months. This machine will be useful only for some extent, i feel.

Congratulations ! and wish you all the best Abhiman & Nidhish . It will be good if you Come to Mangalore and Bangalore and apply your technology . Garbage is burnt in India which is the cheapest technology for our government to save money. When countries in Europe are thinking about how to save the environment our goverment in India is thinking how to destroy the enviornment.Plastics are burnt everyday and the air gets polluted , plastics are thrown in the soil and the soil gets polluted , plastics are also mixing in the river and the rivers and marine life also gets affected. It is high time that our Muncipal authority think about waste management which is profitable.
