Mangalore, May 6: Eight people were killed in an accident that occured at Doddekere in Jokatte here on Sunday May 6 afternoon. Initial reports had claimed seven deaths, but later another injured died in the hospital.

Two of the deceased have been identified as Chandan Kumar and Chandru, both of whom passed away in AJ Hospital where all the injured had been admitted.

Those injured have been identified as Safayan (19), Abhishek (18), Indrajit (25), Shaji (30), Karthik Maranaa (25), Gurucharan (35), Karaneshwar Nair (44), Sheikh Imran (19), Poojananda Paida (25), Hemanth (21) and Chandalal (24).

Panambur circle inspector Valentine D'Souza told Daijiworld that the process to identify the rest of the deceased is on.

The accident occured at around 2 pm when the driver of a tempo lost control and the vehicle rolled over the side of the road and fell into a gorge. It is said that the driver was speeding, and before falling into the 10-ft gorge, the tempo rolled over three times.

Sources said that they were all labourers who were on their way to MSEZ site. The vehicle is Tempo Trax Kargo King, which is meant for transporting goods, was being allegedly used by the MSEZ to carry labourers to the site. The MSEZ is home to around 25,000 labourers.

Around 15 labourers were injured and admitted to AJ hospital. Of them, two were said to be critical.

There were around 25 labourers in all, hailing from north India, mainly from UP, Punjab and Bihar.

Angered by the incident, the locals pelted stones at another MSEZ Tempo Trax which was also carrying labourers and passing by Jokatte.

Panambur police have rushed to the spot.

Very sad. It seems we dont have value for human life. The tempo without seats in the back is permitted to take 8 to 10 people is crime. These type of pick ups only allowed to carry the people in the front seat. In any standards this is not acceptable and why the police is not checking this?
Really inhuman and the owner should be responsible for this.

Mr. Rakesh shetty, Mangalore: You have mentioned in your comments that Central Government should provide Special Traffic Police Squad. You should know that Police Department comes under the jurisdiction of the respective State Government. It is a STATE SUBJECT. Without knowing things do not comment and prove your IGNORANCE over here. Wake up Mr. Rakesh Shetty and do not bring in Central Government when the matter in question is the domain of the State Government.

Nobody fears the laws of this country. Both, the enforcers who employ it for their monetary gains and the people at large. Here it is MSEZ or the contractor. Don't blame the driving.

I THINK ACCIDENTS HAPPENING BECAUSE OF IRRESPONSIBLE OF DRIVING.

RTO SHOULD ALERT MORE . THEY SHOULD MAKE STRICT AGAINST DRIVING LICENSE.

EVERYWHERE THEY SHOULD APPLY SPEED LIMIT AND RADAR .

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD PROVIDE SPECIAL TRAFFIC POLICE SQUAD IN EACH AREA TO CONTROL ACCIDENT.

The headline says 7 killed. Inside the news it says 15 injured.
OMG 21 people were bundled in this vehicle.
Unfortunately in India the rules regarding maximum allowable passengers, cattle and load for ore laden trucks are formulated only to collect bribes not for safety.

I think MSEZ is not only violating environment laws but also human rights. How on earth MSEZ which follows every rule and law can transport workers on goods truck. Even animals which are being transported to slaughter houses get better treatment.

everyday morning we see thousands of vehicles transporting people in trucks and tractors to various construction sites all over india.
only short cut by contractors to make profits. the contractors and enginners are also ssen on the same roads in air conditioned cabs and buses.no value for human life in india. so many young lives lost. can t the police and govt impose s strict ban on transporting people in goods vehicles.

Most unfortunate! In our country specially in D.K. and Udupi Dist. when cattle's are being transported in Tempo Tracks (either for good or bad reasons) immediately the watch dog agencies/self policing organization prowl on the transporter and beat him blue and black. Are these human souls lost their lives are less worth than the cattle's ? Where are these people?
May the departed souls rest in peace.

I think they misunderstood the very meaning of MSEZ as “Mangalore Special Economical Zone” instead of “Economic Zone” It is very hearting to see or hear that having 25,000 workforces, but still they transport people in Tempo like vehicles??? Let us altogether give our heartfelt condolences to family or relatives of those deceased but we need an accountability from State Government too since it is Government owned Company. Let all MP, MLA, Corporators, Mayor, DC and Police Chief from our region should stay in Jail for 7 days at least to show their gratitude and feel the pain of seven human loses. Concerned Officers, Directors and Supervisors from MSEZ Company should also be terminated and held responsible for human losses.

Can tempos be used to transport human beings like animals that too by a govt. organization? Immediate action should be taken against those involved in this and hefty compensation paid to the kin of those who perished. In India a dogs life is better than that of a poor laborer! May their souls rest in peace!!!
