Mangalore, May 7: Gold jewellery and cash worth Rs 5 lac was stolen from a family of three while they were returning by Konkan Railway train to Mangalore from Thane.

The family of Albert Gomes, Joyce Gomes and Karen Gomes, from Attavar here, lost their valuables consisting of jewellery worth more than Rs 4 lac and cash amounting to Rs 27,000 along with their return tickets.

The incident took place on Friday May 4, but the complaints at the Konkan railway police and Attavar police were registered on Monday May 7.

According to the complaint, when the train had reached Suratkal on Friday evening, the family got ready to alight at Mangalore station and stood near the doorway with their luggage.

At that moment, four strangers came where they stood and picked up a fight with the family for standing near the door. The complaint alleges that the fight was a trick by the foursome to divert their attention while one of the four stealthily stole the jewellery and cash from a maroon trolley bag belonging to the family.

The thieves left the bag but got away with the ornaments. The theft came to light only after they alighted from the train in the city.

In the complaint, it is also alleged that there was no security and even the ticket collector had not come to the family.

Incidentally, another person, Uday Shetty from Mangaladevi went through a similar experience the next day on a train. He was returning to Mangalore from Mumbai when gold and cash worth Rs 3 lac was stolen from him in a similar manner. He too has registered a complaint with the railway police.

While I have sympathies for the victims of jewel theft, It's shame on Railway police force for day today theft that takes place in suburban stations of Konkan Railway. So many incidents of robbery, Jewel and cash theft have taken place in the recent past and the police have moving hand-in-gloves with the robbers. This is a pathetic situation in our Twin Districts of Coastal Karnataka.

If Police takes up the initiative to combat theft with determination and dedication, genuine inhabitants of districts can have a sigh of relief.
Its a mistry that we have strong police force filled with corrupt officials.

I sympathize with the victims and wish they are able to get back the gold soon!!Too much naivety on the part of the victims to be carrying so much of gold and cash in person. It is common knowledge that during vacation times/marriage seasons professional robbers are at work in full swing especially in railways. They operate with impunity right under the nose of the law enforcers!! Such high stakes could even be a risk to life as these desperadoes can go to any extent to snatch the booty!!

The tragedy today is that gold has become so precious that poor cannot afford to buy it and the rich cannot afford to display it!!! Days of adorning oneself with gold and proudly showcasing are gone. It is better left as an asset in the bank locker!!!

I regularly follow the comments in Daijiworld. Unfortunately I have noticed there are some persons who regularly comment but on party/religion lines only. They cant think beyond that. Why cant they have balance of mind before writing comments. Comments should made in positive mind it should contribute towards improvement. Unfortunately I see several comments regularly by certain people which is conributing to hatred.

Dear Gomes family. Sad to hear about this incident. Anyhow, dont loose hope but thank God that they did not rob you off on knife/gun point......Always while travelling remember to distribute your assets and maintain a simple dress code. Also if you suspect any stranger by their actions/talk while travelling than talk loudly about police/army and CON the stranger to beleive that you come from such family...finally most simple thing is to carry travellers cheque if you have to take large sums of cash..you have to bear a small commission but is always safe and best option...Personally I have used such cheques and I have peace of mind on Indian railways.Better late then never.

Our people are ignorant about strangers. If you look at the family which travels in the train you will agree with me for reasons best known to all of us:
    1) Talking over the phone constantly 2) Listening to music as if they never heard of
    3) Never keep an eye on the others
    4) Returning from Gulf with lots of things to show off

I think thieves are having very sophisticated machine which will find out what goods/ornaments passengers are carrying. Then they target right passenger for a bumper prize. To the best of my knowledge, this is the 3rd gold robbery in Mangalore bound train. If it goes like this, then we have to wear only LANGOTI and travel by trains. Indian Railway..WAKE UP PLEASE.

Different people aired their views in different angles. But real sufferers are the passengers/people who travel by train.Gone is gone.No solution/remedy for this in spite of several hue and cry. This is hand in gloves activities with all the people responsible in the department. This is nothing but a cancer in our so called democratic country like India.India is developing in all the angles. To certain extent I do agree with Ms.Shalini Salian, mangalore but at the same time we can not even spare the passengers. While carrying such a valuable items they could have been more alert and paid more attention towards their luggage. As many have suggested CCTV along with round the clock security guards,TCs etc are the viable solution for the time being provided railway authorities coupled with state/central government takes an initiative to tackle the problems like this in the best interest of tavelling passengers by train. This type of frequent theft really tarnish the image of glowing/developing India (and lose confidence in rail journey) which is already in bad taste due to our political system and corrupt officials/authorities at lower to higher places.Very very sorry episode.Immediate and quick action from the concerned authorities/departments should be taken to stop this kind of menace.
Positive response is anticipated from the railway ministry.Jai Hind.

As per my analysis, the Gomes family are to be blamed for the theft of jewellery worth Rs. 4 Lakh. Reasons being 1. With Rs 4 Lakhs worth of Jewellery u don't travel by Rail this is Indian Railways not Dubai Metro which has CCTV's , COPS & CID's everywhere 2. In India if you try to do compromise on some things to save few hundreds , u will end up losing millions 3. While travelling my Indian Railways keep a low profile and don't wear clothes which will reveal your dollars

All the trains running upwards and downwards on Konkan Railway route will be halting for 20 minutes atleast, in Mangalore Junction station for refilling fuel, water and changing the staffs since Mangalore Junction is the first station in Konkan Railway route.

We can see families with woman and children with their huge luggage standing at the door before train reaches the station. It is a common scene in almost all the trains.

Carrying valuables and exposing them is the clear invitation to the professional thieves .We have heard and seen so many incidents before in Konkan Railway route.

Protecting our belongings will be our duty . It will be better than leaving the responsibility on Railway Police or Officials.

    Passengers.... be careful next

This is utter negligence from passengers. Everyday we are reading in the newspaper that, theft is carried out in trains, then its our (Passengers) duty to be more alert. Why this family were standing near the door in Suratkal even though they want to get down in Mangalore?
Do you guys think that, our police will do anything on this issue?
Prevention is always better than cure. When we are carrying valuables its our duty not to lose our attention.
So be careful while traveling either in Bus or Train.

What amazes one is that these thefts occur when one is asleep, fully awake, boarding , alighting, eating food, conversing, going to toilet, wanting to help the eldely etc, etc,. I mean there seems to be a 'specialised'task force to deal depending on the circumstances. The 'Railways' would do well to take 'lessons' from these 'Rogues' to improve their service efficiency !
