Mangalore, May 9: In a suprise raid, health inspectorson Wednesday May 9 swooped down on shops in Bunder here and slapped fines on those selling plastic items with thickness less than 40 microns.

Apart from imposing fines and seizing plastic items, the inspectors also sealed four shops in Bunder here for allegedly running their trade without the licence from Mangalore City Corporation.

The inspectors stopped at various shops and inspected the quality of the plastic goods using a gauge. The officers then confiscated plastic items lesser than 40 microns in thickness. Several shopowners also had to pay fines for the poor quality of the plastic.

After sealing the shops, the inspectors directed them to fetch license to start business again. "No one was arrested but we warned them and imposed a penalty of Rs 250 on the owners," said health inspector Raghunath speaking to daijiworld.

'Megha' building and shops in Bibi Alabi road, Bunder were raided by the officers.

The raid was carried out by Raghunath, environment officer Madhu of City Corporation, Inspector Sushanth, Santhosh, Yeshwanth, Bharath and Basavraj among others.

The Supreme Court on Monday voiced concern over the extensive use of plastic bags and the dangers they posed to the environment, saying unless steps were taken the next generation faced a threat greater than an “atom bomb”.

The apex court, which was hearing a petition by two non-government organisations working to protect animals, d its intent to completely ban use of such bags or make it mandatory for manufacturers to pick up their plastic waste and recycle it.

“Unless there is a complete ban or plastic-manufacturers retrieve and recycle the plastic, the next generation faces a threat that is greater than the atom bomb,” Justice G.S. Singhvi, sitting alongside Justice S.J. Mukhopadhyaya, said.

The PIL petitioners through senior advocate Shyam Divan cited studies showing veterinary hospital operation data finding 30-50 kg of plastic in cows stomachs across the country.

He said generally people dispose of food in plastic bags in municipal bins. Attracted by the food the cows eat it up along with the plastic bag, which is found to get stuck inside the cow’s stomach.

Take action on manufacturers of Plastic Bags. Shop owners are not having enough technical equipment such as 'THICKNESS GUAGE METER' to check the gauge of plastic bags. They need to buy plastisol bags from registered mfgs with details of bags printed on the packing cover. Officers are using dial thickness gauge meter instead of Digital meter to get the perfect accuracy. Moreover thickness of bag may not be the same at all points, only by weighing the bag one can determine the perfect micron.

The ban on sale of plastics had come years ago. Why are the MCC officials taking action now ?

Moreover the building put up by Krishna Palemar in front of Webster Market ( Veg market ) itself is illegal. What action has the same MCC taken regarding this illegal building ?

I would like to apply for a certified copy of the sanctioned building plan under RTI and proceed to the High Court to seek justice.I will involve the same MCC officials starting from the Commissioner,Town Planning officer etc onwards.

Ha Ha Jokers of the Health Dept. Go to Bejai, the footpath has been allotted to sell fish, poultry products, meat and vegetables in front of the Church and Lourdes Central School. The scene is pathetic. The new market building to be inaugurated in June 2009 as promised by the Corporator is yet to stand on its pillars! First care for public health and the environment will be automatically taken care of.

The Officials Crack Down on Illegal Plastic Sale, Sealed Four Shops but is this the solution to the problem?
Sir, put the owners o f the sealed shop behind bar and ask to spill the beans and name the owners of the factory where these under-graded plastic bags are manufactured. Don't simply chop the tip of the menace as an eye-wash instead go to the roots and uproot the illegal manufacturers for good.
    Jai Hind!

It must be a typo error, I think the word thousand is missing after Rs 250 which I think is not sufficent to replace the the environmental damage. Why only Bunder area is it blacklisted. Hope it's not a Birthday of any of these 7 people conducting the raid, if so this will only be a source to generate income to the evening party.

We have to appreciate this move by the health authorities, how far this movement continues, one has to observe. Kindly note there may be recycled bags used for packaging food. The quote by Mr . Ashok is commendable hygiene point of view, which department will take this initiative. In Middle East such raids are performed during wee hours to check for any stale food in refrigerator. Good luck to ALL who anticipate improvement and hygiene drive by the government administration.

Wow... What a great achievement by MCC Officials !!! They need to carry the thickness measuring gauge to CHECK THE DEPTH OF THE POTHOLES found on Mangalorean Roads. Then, public should be allowed to fine these MCC officials for their negligence. These MCC officials need to understand their priorities and act accordingly.

The next stage of this raid will be the dialogue between MCC officials and the Shopkeepers : "Anna bakka pidaayi thikkle, paatherga"
