Mangalore : Traffic Police Begin 'Operation Tinted Cars'

Daijiword Media Network—Mangalore (PS)

Mangalore, May 15: Traffic cops across the city started removing sun films free of cost from vehicle windows on Tuesday May 15. In areas like Commissioner’s Office, Balmatta, the sun films of a few cars were removed in the evening.

The move followed the Supreme Court judgment dated April 27, 2012, which prohibited any modification to the windscreens and windows of vehicles by adding any laminated film and held it illegal as per the provisions of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor Vehicles Rules Act, 1989.

Sources at the traffic police station said that after the police commissioner intimated the staff to proceed with the enforcement of the rule and sun films were peeled off for free by the cops.

Earlier Prathap Reddy, IGP, Western Range, had released a press note mentioning the enforcement of the rule in the city.

The Central Motor Vehicle Rules Act says the glasses of windscreens and rear windows of vehicles should have a visual light transmission of 70 per cent. For side windows, it should be at least 50 per cent.

The tint on the Commissioner of Police, D.C, S.P, Tahasildar ,District Judge,NMPT Chairman, Coll. of Customs,MLA's , M.P's vehicles etc should be removed by the same police constables. The Supreme Court order does not allow these official vehicles to have it too.

It is very easy to comment on the action taken by the Police. However they have to follow the Court ruling. In what other way can they adhere to the rules prescribed by The Government?. The safety of the people comes first and there is perfect justification in the Police taking appropriate action in the matter of removing the the dark films affixed to the glasses of motor vehicles.

Casting aspersions in general against the Police Department is not fair. Of course there are corrupt policemen just as there are corrupt people. In the context of the present situation, let us cooperate with the department of Law and Order and make their task easier.

It appears that the traffic cops or even their officers have not read or understood the MV Act & rules or the import of the SUPREME court ruling.Supreme court cannot rule against law and notified rules.Somebody please interpret the ruling in true perspective and teach cops and their officers. This ruling needs review by Hon"ble judges.See our fate being bullied by arrogant rude cops on road and forced to pay fine to fill Govt's empty coffers.

This is not going to solve any problem except for giving some corrupt policemen to harrass people for bribes. I think Supreme Courts should also consider banning kitchen knives because more people have been killed by stabbing in open than crimes behind tinted glasses. Sometimes I feel some of our honorable judges don't have brains at their right places for proper application of mind

First of all, Police Personnel are doing a job which we vehicle owners should be doing.
Let us not criticise the Police Deaprtment so much as few people have done in this. How many of our general public like following rules and regulations? Most of our citizens find joy in breaking rules. So if Police have started the job, let it go on. Those who find this strange, could initiate doing it by themselves.
No doubt these removed plastic sheets will pose a threat to environment, am sure concerned authorities will take care of that too. For few people who have an elergy for sun, this could be a tough one to follow.
As responsible citizens, lets start to appreciate rules and follow them than criticise the same

Im sure the multi-crore sun film industry wont keep quiet! Its their bread and butter after all! They didnt invest so many crores just for the heck of it! First the cops will pull off the films and a coupla month later the judgement will be revoked following which the sun film companies and dealers will make merry!
I would like to know how the cops are gonna deal will the waste sunfilms that have been pulled off the cars.

NOTE: For cars with rear de-foggers, please have the dealer or so take off the film as the heater wires get damaged very easily. Dont just pull the sunfilm off!

Why police has to spend time on peeling off the film for free...do they lack work. Dear police concentrate on what you should be doing. Do not waste tax payers money on these works. Sad thing is by all these things criminals will move in tinted cars freely and only other helpless guy's will be punished.

Very Very Good Job by the cops in Mangalore. Actually many believes that this time Cops acted very soon, actually it is not. They waited for other cities like Chandigarh, Bangalore, Delhi cops to act first and then followed the same.
I would like to thank for the Cops who DID NOT impose Fine but started removing the film. There are two advantages one, Tint will be removed from the Car FREE OF COST. secondly This will reduce the chances of bribing the cops. Then those who can throw money will keep on throwing money to the cops and even cops will enjoy receiving it from their end.
As par the heat is concerned one can avoid travelling during hot suns if its really a concern. It is normal phenomena in the minds of public to show resistance for any GOOD CHANGE. Just think of your daughter getting kidnapped and not one could help because no one can notice it.

I have read many of the negative comments to Mangalore police in removing the tint on cars. First of all we should applaud the order of the Supreme Court of India and secondly we should applaud the police for acting immediately. The work of the police could be professionally or unprofessionally in removing the tint on cars at the end of the day. If the tint is removed and someone cannot enjoy the heat inside the car, then start enjoying the heat just as we enjoy the cool. Just as life is a mixture of ups and downs in the same way weather is a mixture of cool and hot.

So get used to the other side of sitting inside the car. In many cases police never act immediately but in this case they have done so, as having tint on cars puts a full stop to various illegal activity especially the youngsters who have irresponsible parents. There are a lot of illegal things in this country and the politicians never have the will power to legalise it because of vote bank but it is only and only supreme court can do it. As Supreme court said where the state is not properly managed then the supreme court has every right to interfere and correct it. If the city has to be crime free then removing the tint on cars is one of the way of reducing crime.

The police should not stop this work and continue with it for next 6 months as many people who have money to throw will definitely put it again and again. Even hefty fines to the tune of Rs. 10,000 plus can be imposed to straighten some of the car owners. Kudos to the Supreme Court and to the Police.

These cops are crazy. the tint film has got a transparent gum, which actually takes its reason and action with water base. Even if you have the 30% cover, our dear cops will talk about 70% visibility. It is very important that they know the percentage of visibility allowed. The whole world knows that if a car registered in the name of man, then all round the car it 30% tinting allowed. If a women, then the rear passenger door is allowed to 40% and the drivers seat to 30%, subject to the rear being not more than 18% for safety purpose.

Just peeling off the tint film by the cops is not acceptable as it will leave the gum base on the glass of the windows. Who will clear it ? The cops, RTO, or our dear govt ? Honestly speaking, our govt is good in banning on things which is been allowed by rest of the world. Guess, they should also follow the improvement implementation as well. Only then we can say WE ARE A DEVELOPED COUNTRY.... Jai hind. ! Pls correct me if I am wrong as most of my life has been abroad where we respect the local govt. regulations.

Now, how do we dispose the newer plastic non-biodegradale waste in the form of sheets ? We surely will have a couple of tons of the same. People with sun/ UV sensitivity will henceforth have to use sunscreen lotions within the cars too !!! Car A/C will have to strain more to cool the cars, which means more fuel burning and more heat generation too !

Good move by the cops. But how do they check the 70% & 50% visibility. I have a tint for my car but nowhere the percentage is mentioned. I think its less than 50%...but anyways is there any fool proof mechanism.
Forget this there are lot of cars in kudla with not only the side & rear but also the FRONT windshield full tint. May be most of these boys who own these cars have lots of BEAUTIFUL luggage around .)Anyways welcome SUN...
