Udupi: Tiny Islands Provide a Picturesque Escape

By Suvarna Brahmavar

Udupi, May 21: The coastal district has several small islands that are vernacularly known as ‘Kudru’ and can provide solace in the chaos of daily living.

These tiny masses of earth surrounded by rivulets have lush greenery, a soothing breeze, and are absolutely free from noise pollution and wherein one feels life is still.  There are many picturesque tiny islands in the neighbourhood of Brahmavar, near here.  To name a few, Kukkekudru, Mestanakudru, Kiniyarakudru, Balkudru, Bennekudru, Bavalikudru, Saibarakudru etc.

Here are a few pictures for Daijiworld readers.

Beautifully presented article, Along Costal Karnataka, nature is lovely. Thanks Mr. Suvarna of Daiji World.
From last decade and half the revenue yielding agriculture & coconut farming of coastal Karnataka has suffered financially. During good times of farming, the same sector was backbone of Coastal Karnataka economy and was a huge tax base for the Government. Presently, Government must take initiatives to compensate the dependent families, as maintenance of coconut farms and agriculture land are more expensive than revenue generated by the farms.

The entire region of coastal from Byndoor to Kasargod is beautiful with such tiny Islands. We are lucky and grateful to God to have such Islands which are most beauty of teh nature. Thousands of people earn their livelyhood here and most people live happily.Government has to do something to improve the facilities road links and boats and hotels in these islands as these are tourist spots.

With strict CRZ rules , one cannot develop any island or beach areas.Hence please BEWARE and check with the CRZ Dept.Don't blindly invest and lose your hard earned money.

Its sad to have this strict CRZ rules.Yes, pollution control should be a must. But the CRZ Dept. has blindly created zones where one cannot develop for tourism. Likewise Kerala has done away with the CRZ rules and gives permission for constructing resorts but with stringent pollution control rules to save the environment.

But in Karnataka, the tourism Minister was Janardhana Reddy, son of a police constable, studied upto the 6th std.So what could one expect from him on tourism ? Half their tenure they are in Jail !

We have already approach entrepreneurs to invest heavily on 'kudrus' as well as in 'tonse'/kemmmanu/kalyanpura/hoode' so as to accomodate all 2.5% at one place like it's in Philippines. All will be available like bar/wine shop/casions/discos/dukkar shop/bakery/cold storage so after having 'mass' will direct enter any of it without any much delay.

Mangalore to Kundapura by bus or by your own car. Just go to the riverside harbour or we call it Kalva Bagilu - hire a boat and sail along one "Kudru" to another "Kudru"
If you have any friends living on any of those kudrus - you will enjoy your trip - good fresh fish/cockle curry - fried fish - crab curry etc prepared by them - otherwise you have to take your food and plenty of drinking water with you. There are hardly any hotels/restaurants on the island except may be small canteens serving tea/coffee/wada and those type of food - if you go there now - it will be hot and humid - novemebr/dec./Jan - ideal time - also rainy season - if u want to cosy around with your partner inside the house and sit and angle from the River Bank - It may not be such a good idea to go holidaying there right now as places to stay/food serving places are not available easily.

Like me i have a few relatives on those kudrus - I thoroughly enjoy my visits over there. It's just heaven for us when we holiday there. Try out once - you will get a fair idea as to what all required for your next longer trip there.

THIS ISLAND CONDITION IS BAD BECAUSE OF CENTRAL GOVT. NEGLIGENCE.

CENTRAL GOVT. SHOULD GIVE ORDER TO IMPROVE SUCH KIND OF ISLAND.

THEY DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS KIND OF WORK. OSCAR ALSO NOT DOING ANYTHING FOR HIS DISTRICT.

THAT'S WHY THIS ISLAND CONDITION IS VERY BAD.

SUPPOSE, IF CENTRAL GOVT. MAKE IMPROVE, THEN THIS WILL GOING TO BE A BEST TOURIST SPOT IN KARNATAKA. THEN NOBODY WILL GO TO KERALA.

While little islands are a beautiful and exciting places for nature lovers, residents of these islands dont always share the same feelings. For them it is a life of never ending drudgery and hopeless ness. People who can afford, move out because it is impractical for either them or the Government to build bridges to these sparsely populated islands. But looking at it from the nature's point of view, it is a good thing because these islands survive human intervention.

We the people of Udupi/Kundapura belt are lucky to have such beautiful islands (kudrus) and many families living in such islands have already moved out of island due to poor transprt system, drinking water problem and power problem and fear of flood. These island can be transformed into natural tourist island and can attract lots of tourists. I hope such development takes place but without harming our nature.
