Mangalore, May 25: Demanding immediate construction of rickshaw stands and to bring down the recent hike in the price of petrol, auto drivers led by Dakshina Kannada auto drivers' union staged an intense protest in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) building here and also in front of DC’s office on Friday May 25.

Addressing a gathering of protesters and auto drivers, union president Ivan D’Souza said that there auto drivers have not been provided with a proper rickshaw stand even though they work round the clock.

"There are as many as 5,600 auto rickshaws in the city and only 74 authorized stands are available. Moreover, even those stands lack basic facilities like toilets and drinking water," he added.

"We have pointed out the need for a minimum of 312 rickshaw stands in the city; accordingly, the MCC should notify all those areas," he said.

"Due to concreting and widening of roads, the actual rickshaw parks have disappeared. We had raised the issue earlier too and the proposal was discussed in the standing committee," said Ivan D'Souza.

Apart from auto stands, the protesters also demanded rollback of hike in the price of petrol.

L D Suvarna and Hasan Ali of 'Samanvaya Samiti' also spoke demanding the construction of auto stands in the city.

The protestors submitted a memorandum to joint commissioner Srikanth Rao in this regard. He received the appeal and replied to the protesters demand on behalf of the MCC commissioner.

Rao told the auto drivers that a team was formed to find out the actual need for auto stands. "We evaluated that 241 new rickshaw stands were required in the city. Accordingly, a standing committee was set and the proposal was passed. But due to the upcoming legislative election on June 10, the notification has been delayed. In month’s time we will solve the issue," he assured.

The protestors marched from Urwa grounds and staged the protest in front of the MCC building and continued the march till DC's office where again they staged the protest.

All the auto rickshaws in the city had stopped plying. Auto drivers of all the unions and associations in the city took part in the protest.

These autorickshaw drivers have no end to their demands. The rickshaw fare in Mangalore is the higher than any metro city in India. The fare is 1.5 times that in Mumbai. Most of them run on CNG. Rickshaw is supposed to pick up customers on road and not expect people to come to rickshaw stands. Public should know their rights and should not agree for such dadagiri. There is no parking place for vehicles in city but rickshaw fellow want more stands!!! Public should not agree to such dadagiri and should not budge to overcharging. Pay by meter only.

The government will not spare collecting the service tax but is not willing to provide infrastructure to those paying taxes. What is the purpose of taxes being collected if not to put it back into that sector to improvise it. In India its only to pay the **** Babus salaries only.

I have no intention to hurt anyone's feeling. Since I have been living and working in a oil producing country in the Gulf for over 30 years, I have seen the cost of a barrel of oil had gone from barely $3 to over $110 today. India produces just 40% domestically. Even UAE raised the petrol prices by over 40% where the country produces approx 2.5 million barrels of oil a day. How do we expect our Government to subsidize such a large expenditure and provide fuel at very low rate? We will face difficulties, but we have to to privatize the petrol distribution so taht the Government does not have to resort to indirect taxes on the polulation to keep low petrol prices.

It is wrong to blame Congress for the incease it is a coalition government and all parties, including opposition, should find a way to liberalize this menace. Until an alterntive energy sources is found, this world will be held to ransome by the oil producing countries.

Ivan D'souza instead of protesting in Mangalore, go to Janapath, Delhi & protest before Italian to reduce price of Petrol. Why simpy make publicity stunt in Mangalore. Petrol price control comes under Petroleum Ministry at Centre & not under MCC.

Like auto drivers did, if citizens of India protest against fuel price hike, the NON-GRACE govt will have to withdraw fuel price hike. The looters will loot as long as people do not raise voice against them. CONGRESS has done nothing in this country except contributing corruption, terrorism, minority/OBC reservation, hiking essential things price etc.

why blame the centre only for the hike in petrol price. The tax on petrol is the highest in Karnataka. the govt here is collecting more tax and blaming the centre for the high prices... both the centre and state governments need to get their acts right.

These rickshaw drivers must first be taught how to behave with the passengers. The meter that keeps skipping faster than the rickshaw itself and then the arguing for more money than shown on the meter. It is horrible to even talk to them as they begin abusing to which level we cant .Before the stand, make an office which regulates these manipulative rickshaw drivers, where we can lodge complaint when they misbehave!!!!!
