Mangalore, May 30: It’s school time again. There is excitement in the air, mixed with anxiety, happiness and sadness as well. It is that time of the year when old friends meet after a long vacation, stories are exchanged and new friends and teachers looked forward to.

Probably the nicest thing about going back to school are new books and their fresh frangrance, new uniforms, umbrellas and what not. An amusing part of school life, perhaps with every school kid, is that notebooks have the first five-ten pages written neatly and carefully, and the rest, as the year, goes by, just scribbled!

While the more studious types said school time is 'cool time' as there will be homework, tests and assignments, the happy-go-lucky had a 'missing holidays' kind of look on their faces.

For many, there is sadness of summer vacation coming to an end. It's time again for hard work. And for those shifting schools or beginning school life, butterflies in the stomach have a field day. Cries and wails of toddlers resound in kindergarten classes, while some of the braver ones are seen reassuring them.

Fortunately for the kids, unlike most years, this time schools began without the onslaught of rain. The empty buses are once again brimming, and the morning and evening rush hours are back.

In addition, when most teachers allow the students to select their own seats on the first day, by the second or third morning, their luck runs out and they are made to sit as per the teacher's plan.

Welcome back to School day before children have received lots of greetings but to-day perhaps unfortunatly is a Holiday you have. For the reason of Bharath Bandh. Rejoice children but to-morrow once again be back to school. Home work is what I remember my child hood, used to complete just before starting for school. But contstantrated on studies. Missed our childhood graces. May all these future children enjoy the. renewed Schools opertunities and its study well to achieve many goals through their complete effort and hard work.

During our schooldays, the first day in the higher class was a thrill. However it was a sad day for those who had failed and had to repeat.
What about tomorrow? Has the ministry of Education d a holiday or the children have to come to school at their own risk?

Wonderful to see the children in uniform back in school.Look at the happiness in their face.

Equally felt bad to see only 16 children at the photo shot at Govt.School, Pandeshwar.

May GOD bless all the children and show them the best path to come up in life.

Excellent photographies! Such snaps of running race make me nostalgic for school days. So lucky childrens to receive laddoos on first day. Sweets on first day, beatings next after.

The fresh fragrance of the new books mentioned by the author raises some concerns as it is widely known that toxic adhesives are often "huffed" for a cheap high. This may explain the "cool time" mentioned by the author further on in this piece.

Another sadness is the size of the school bags these little ones have to carry. Some bags look bigger than the child carrying it. Hopefully their brains get as much workout as their backs!

Best of luck to the childrens! Study hard and you will surely be grate success.

Well, first of all, I wish all the schooling children, all the very best, do well again in your further studies. Be bold and be on your toes, and get set go.God is our protecter, pray at all times and he will protect you always.
My heart goes towards those children, who are seen more joyfull than other children. For they are coming from poor families and running with bare foot to the school.May God bless these children. I hope one day these children will study well and come up and do well in their stuies and work hard for their future.

The first five (5) pics are fantastic. It has reminded me of my childhood days. "Shaaley bittitu, Odiri Manegey" (in pure Managalorean Kannada tone). AmaZinglY this "Odiri Manege" would end up once you cross the compound hall of a particular school, where we used to study. Thank you Daiji for publishing these beautiful (beeuuuuutiful) photos as you ever do.

Young boys and girls sitting on the two wheeler in front and back unprotected is a perfect recipe for disaster.

I can see of lot of children running around without footwear. I am not sure if it is due to poverty, lack of awareness, force of habit or negligence. Not a healthy sign.

    Tiny Tots
    Back to school, they trot
    Without any 'wordly' thought
    We think we teach them
But we should actually be 'taught'!
