Udupi: Children of Migrant Labourers Admitted to Schools

Udupi, Jun 5: In a praiseworthy step, the district education department admitted children of migrant labourers of Balaipady near Udyavar to schools and hostel here on Tuesday June 5.

Of the 17 children in the area, 7 were admitted to Bannanje hostel and Vivekananda school and other schools. The remaining children will be admitted in the coming days as their parents were still reluctant to allow them.

The children hail from various districts like Davangere, Gulbarga and others.

Two days ago, zilla panchayat CEO H A Prabhakar Sharma happened to speak to Meenakshi, a migrant labourer's child near his house, and learnt that she and others like her were interested in going to school.

Taking swift action, Sharma initiated the drive to bring such children to schools. Apart from Meenakshi, Prithvi, Udaya, Ganesh, Ganga, Talamma and Hanumatha were admitted to schools.

Speaking on the occasion, DDPI Nagendra Madyastha said that the department aims to admit 80 children from all backgrounds in schools, be it migrant labourers or those who do not have access to education.

He further said that all facilities like hostel accomodation and so on will be provided to the students. "Nothing will be lacking," he assured.

District welfare officer Shivalinge Gowda, hostel warden Sheshappa, department officials Roshan and Gaviyappa, BEO Vasanth Shetty, Vivekananda school principal Raju and others were present.

This is an excellent move. The reluctant parents should be convinced at the the earliest, so that their children do not stay behind. Their attendance needs to be monitored from time to time and if possible some basi education should be imparted to the parents. Recently a survey revealed that the crime rate had a direct bearing on illiteracy. It would be nice, if some ornanisations could find out if there are children in other areas who need to be sent to school.

    China Literacy Rate 95.9%

    India Literacy Rate 74.04%

India currently has the largest illiterate population of any nation on earth

It is estimated that by the year 2020 over 50% of the Total World Illiterate population will live in India

I don't have to praise Mr.H A Prabhakar Sharma for this initiative. Govt officials who are suppossed to be doing their job dont do their job and hence we have to praise the handful of them who do what they are supposed to be doing.

Great work done by CEO Prabhakar Sharma. Migrant people are living far from locals (road side or some govt.plots) and entirely different atmosphere. If they come to near locals residents, locals will kick out them. That is why they will stay apart from local residents. They are not much awareness about the education.Their instant intention getting only daily bread. locals of that place or organization need to take care about the education movement to send migrant labours childrens. Best of Luck.

NEED OF THE HOUR IS TO ADMIT MORE & MORE CHILDRENS TO SCHOOL.

STATE , CENTRAL & LOCAL AUTHORITYIES SHOULD TAKE INITIATIVE ON WARFOOTING REGARDING THIS.

IF YOU SEE THE PHOTOGRAPHS TEARS WILL COME OUT . LOOK AT HE SMALL BOY WITH BLACK T-SHIRT IN LAST PHOTOGRAPH. DEFINATELY HE WILL ACHIEVE MASTERS DEGREE IF GIVEN CHANCE FOR STUDY.

SINCE PARENTS ARE UNEDUCATED & POOR THESE INNOCENT CHILDRENS ARE LOOSING THEIR VALUABLE LIFE WITHOUT ANY ACHEIVEMNET.

I AM READY TO DONATE SOME AMOUNT IF TRUST OR AGENCY APPOINTED TO TAKE CARE OF SUCH CHILDRENS.

Exceptional work from the Dept of Education. This instance should be followed henceforth by other districts too. Its painful to see children of migrant labourers languishing without education and eventually becoming one of them. Occupation must come from choice and not by birth.

192 million children between 6-14 years of age across 1.1 million places in India are not going to school. I like very much song of Education department - 'School Chale Hum'. Like to watch it again and again. Should give education to one and all by any means. Who knows tommorow somebody from them become president of india like Abdul Kalam. Every body should contribute bit for that cause in one or other way. Good initiative.
