Mangalore, Sep 1: "Courts in Dakshina Kannada will be renovated at a cost of Rs 53 crore,  which will include construction of quarters for judicial officers at a cost of Rs 26 crore," said state PWD minister C M Udasi.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for 'Vakeel Bhavan' at the court premises here on Saturday September 1, in the presence of former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda.

He further added that Dakshina Kannada is the first and only district in the state to get such a huge fund for renovation of courts and construction of quarters.

On the new court building, he said that the state government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 6 crore, and an additional Rs 4 crore will be spent on the accomodation of advocates. He also added that the construction of the new court building is being undertaken on the request of the Bar Association. He informed that the building is expected to be ready within two years.

He further said that there was a need to build public confidence in the judicial system, and that lawyers and the government share equal responsibility in doing so. "Both advocates as well as the government should ensure that the judiciary functions smoothly, so that justice is delivered without unnecessary delay," he said.

The programme was presided over by high court judge Justice Dr K Bhakthavatsala.

City Bar Council Association president S P Chengappa welcomed the gathering.

Legislative assembly deputy speaker Yogish Bhat, high court judge Justice K L Manjunath, Justice Abdul Nazir, additional advocate general for Karnataka K M Nataraj, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, principal district and session judge Ashok G Nijaganavar and others were present.

We had a very beautiful Court building constructed 120 years ago by British govt, and it was categorized as HERITAGE building. Even then it was demolished 5 years ago to construct new building at the cost of Rs.20 crores, inspite of vehement opposition from all the senior Advocates. Without caring for the sentimental attachments of these Senior Lawyers to that Heritage Building it was pulled down and new building was constructed, even though new Court building could have been contructed at another site by retaining this Heritage building . So where is the necessity of new Court building again. Any way now Mangalore is left with only two Heritage buildings, that is University College building and District commissioners Office, unlike Mysore Belgaum Hubli Bellary which have many Heritage buildings well protected by government itself.

Dear minister can you please give us target year for completion of this court building. Is estimated funds are allocated. Better we Mangaloreans allow ministers to put foundation stones only if they allocate required funds before putting the stone. If not one day Managalore will fill up with foundation stones and we Managaloreans will have to spend hard earn money to remove these foundattion stones.

Why again new Court building is required for Mangalore?
Because the Court Building built during the time of British on Light House Hill, near St.Aloysius College was demolished completely and entirely new Court building was constructed just recently (yet to be formally inaugurated). Then now where they are going to construct this new court building costing Rs.56 crores? Again crores of rupees down the drain!

Let the purpose of foundation laid for new court building become a reality. Our confidence shakes whenever we see politicians doing foundation ceremony.Let this not go the way of Lady Goshan hospital foundation laid by Yedyurappa and Raghava Reddy.
