Mangalore: 'Participation in Cultural Activities to be Criteria for Admissions'

Mangalore, Sep 3: "Along with the NCC, NSS and sports, participation in cultural activities will also be equally considered for academic admissions," said Prof TC Shivashankara Murthy, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University.

He addressed the gathering of students during the inter-collegiate 'Cultural Festival-2012' organized by the University campus here on Monday September 3. 

"Accordingly, we have directed the academy regulations and statutory board to incorporate this particular quota as an achievement of students in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, as these provide greater exposure to the students," he added.

Regarding the fest, he said, "Earlier we organized the same fest in five different colleges funded by the university, however, this year we have hosted the programme in this campus for all colleges under one platform. There are as many as 1,200 students from 192 different colleges taking part in the fest," he added.

Padma Shri awardee and Yakshagana artiste Chittani Ramachandra Hegade was the chief guest.

Narrating the experiences, he said, "It is sheer hard work and dedication that can bring fame. Put your heart and soul in in all that they do."

Dedicating the prestigious Padma Shri Award to the people and fans, he said, "It is because of their constant support that I have been able to achieve such great heights in the field of Yakshagana."

Registrar Dr P S Yadapadithaya, registrar, Mangalore University welcomed and introduced the chief guest. Dr A M A Khader, director of student welfare department thanked the gathering.

The fest which includes fine arts, debates and cultural activities will culminate on Wednesday September 5.
