Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Sep 4: In the wake of increasing number of undesirable activities, specially drug consumption, drug peddling, alcohol consumption in public places, thefts of laptops, mobiles, and two-wheelers, reckless driving, and dancing in hotels after consuming alchohol etc around Manipal vicinity where educational institutions are based, Western Range IGP Pratap Reddy has proposed to install CCTV cameras to monitor such activities.

Addressing a joint emergency meeting called by Udupi police and Manipal university, he said that reckless driving at night has led to several deaths, and many indisciplinary activities by students are being reported. "Steps have already been taken to monitor and control such activities by the Udupi police under the leadership of district SP Dr Boralingaiah, but CCTV monitoring could be a big help," he said.

"Strict action has been taken on those trying to sell drugs around Udupi, and already a couple of people have been arrested," he said.

Manipal University vice-chancellor Ramadas Pai, Dr H S Ballal, V K Prabhu, hostel wardens of Manipal and Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala police heads and others were present during the meeting.

Very absurd decision to monitor "STUDENTS AROUND MANIPAL"!!!!!

    Mr.IGP,

Please remember, it is the police force themselves that are cause for attacks on pubs, churches, homestay business, private property etc., illicit liquor, drugs, prostitution and extortion, as the police are well known to be connected with these anti-socials.

    Mr.IGP,

Why aren't you interested in monitoring the criminals who themselves are instigating criminal activity in learning campuses and residential areas and business premises all over coastal K'taka??

    Mr.IGP,

It is high time that every police station including your own office, as well as the movements and telephone conversations of all cops including yourself be monitored by CCTV and the best evidence gathering tools that are available all over the world.

This will bring credibility to yourself and your "CORRUPT" and manipulating police force in Coastal region/K'taka/India.

i do not know about now, but in 96-2001. there was drugs, drinking , dancing, rash driving all that in manipal, the only difference i feel is the fee structure and the change in life style, those days, no mobile, laptop, so nobody can steal it, the average free seat for Engg was 7000/- per year, payment was 24000/- per year, as of todays 184000/-, so when you have hi paying students, you have hi egos, and attitudes, and hi competition, guess this might be one major factor for the mess today in MANIPAL... my 2 cents

Let's get real. It is like catching the snake by the tail. What good will it make if the hotels & suppliers (politicians owned or influenced) flaunted these rules? Where are the hefty fines for these guys?

Just like the COP who took bribe goes unpunished and the person obliged to pay the bribe is personified.

What system are we talking and ethics? Are we lacking the ethics or the outrageous system in existence?

More than half the theft & illegal sales is promoted business of the influential!

    Dear Sir (IGP Reddy),

Hats off to your brilliant idea of eradicating undesirable activities in and around Manipal which is a Educational hub.

However emphasizing on a few of the activities mentioned by you specially.... viz.: drug consumption, drug peddling, alcohol consumption in public places, reckless driving.... surely cannot be eradicated by use of CCTV's alone that too right at the start.

Instead these evils would have to eradicated from the system which today survives through bribes and haftas paid to the concerned.

On eradicating these would you be able to ensure more discipline in the society after which guess you could have your plain clothes policemen supervising these cleaned up areas.

Only then on introduction of CCTV's would get the desired effect to ensure that the earlier activities are not carried out or reintroduced.

Wishing you and the team the BEST.

    Kind Regards

    Aladdin Pais

It is fine idea to monitor unwanted activities around there, as young blood tend to rash activities.
Problem is maintaining these CCTV after installation. If not maintained/repaired, the third eye, as mentioned by someone here, will be useless and money wasted.
Hope the authorities make sure CCTVs work throughout.

Sriman Rakesh Shetty's idea is great. There should be separate schools/colleges for boys and girls out of sight of each other. So also separate habitats for men and women. If any couple is going out together, they should carry suitable identity to establish their blood relationship or spouse. Sriman Rakesh Shetty should be sent to Saudi Arabia alone for further enhancement of his great ideas.

I DON'T THINK THAT THIS TECHNIQUE WILL REDUCE ALL INCIDENTS AT PRESENT AND IT IS NOT EASY.

BEFORE THAT THEY MUST IMPLEMENT NEW TECHNIQUE.

FIRST THEY MUST BAN ALL SOURCES OF ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES. THEY MUST BAN PUB, RAVE PARTY AREAS,DRUGS,GANJA SELLERS ETC.

POLICE MUST REGULAR CHECK EVERYWHERE AS WELL AS ALL COLLEGE CAMPUS.

IF THIS WORKS, THEN THEY CAN GO FOR CCTV TECHNIQUE FURTHER WITHOUT ANY DOUBT.

Home is the best institutions and parents are the best teachers. Parents are responsible for injecting quality and morale into their children which used to happen in the past But recently most of the parents have shifted this responsibility to the schools and colleges. schools and colleges have become more commercial and their motto is to make money.. so whoever pays most shall get the seats.. Total morale is lost and purpose is defeated...Now we need police to monitor the activities of students and they are using cctv. Students should know their limits too and their responsibilities and stay away from conducting in illegal, unethical, immoral activities..
