Mangalore: Fishermen Rejoice as they Hit Upon 'Thorake' Treasure

Mangalore, Sep 4: Fishermen at the old port in the city had a field day on Monday September 3, as they found a treasury of 'thorake' fish.

The fishermen, who were more than pleased, carried their catch to the shore at old port.

It is learnt that the each fish weighed around 150 kg and the total catch was worth a lac, all of which was sold within a few minutes.

The fish were caught in the deep sea, said the fishermen.

Locals enjoyed the sight as they had never seen such a huge catch of Thorake at a time.

    How does the Forest Dept. allow catching of Sharks which are on the INDIAN ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST and comes under the Indian Wildlife Act / Indian Forest Act ?

    Legal action should be taken against the fishermen under the Indian Wildlife Act / Indian Forest Act.

    wow amazed by the ignorance of fisherman catching something like a baby whale shark, and media mentioning all of them as Rays, and the persons commenting here are thinking as if something extra ordinary has been achieved !!

    Good catch But What about sustainability ? Scientific management of Fish catch is the need of the hour Indiscriminate Fishing had led to scarcity. Profit making and lack of planning is killing the fishing.

    Many people do not know that Thate in Tulu means Shark in English.
    Karnataka Govt has spent 17 crores for worship in all 35000 temple for rain, but was of no use. But Fishermen of our district spent their own money and performed Samudra Pooja during last Poornima with all sincerity , and it has paid off. This shows God rewards only sincere Poojas and not show of government.

    There is nothing to rejoice, they got their money by catching the endangered species. They do not look like thorake/ray fish, all look like some species of shark......they guys should be educated about the endanger fish species....

    Yes Vinayak is absolutely Right.The one in picture is called "Swara " in North Kanara, .In 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th picture, single "Thorke" is also seen.

    Rest all swara ( If its White its called " Haal Swara". Also called bili swara karee swara. etc. Its a good dry fish.
    Fresh ones usually prepared with masala similar to Mutton masala.

    These are the sharks u mentioned and not Thorake (ray)
    whatever at least the fishermen can enjoy this catch, They work so hard and in dangerous circumstances.

    Well said !! Yes, We do like fish recipes. But rampantly exploiting this endangered species would be insensible. Should not become a regular feature. Consider a proposition, if tomorrow Tigers vanish and our future generation can only see photos of this Endangered specie, wouldn't we regret tomorrow at out rampant destruction of the eco-balance and bio-diversity.
    Well , I cannot preach? Yet , 'food for thought'????

    Is it shark? looks like it so! Aren't then endangered? Shameless slaughter!!!I'm not commenting against it for it is their(fishermen's) livelihood and might be rampantly caught in kerala or TN coasts but they are animals who dont have environmental consciousness..just bcos they are doing it we need not!But we should criticize it strongly! we are Karnatakas and should maintain our dignity!

    This is not THORAKE (ray fish in english). The catch is bull shark (Thate in tulu / kannada). Some among these are also mussel shark and ray shark also. Guess these sea masters were chased by whales and hence the local fishermen could get a bumper catch. Such size is mostly in deep sea and they hardly come into anyones hands.
