Centre Nod to Proposal for Special Status to 6 Karnataka Districts

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) : Fulfilling a long pending demand, the Centre today gave its nod to a proposal for granting special status to six backward districts of Karnataka, enabling local reservation in education and jobs, besides development.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cleared the Home Ministry's proposal seeking amendment to the Constitution to provide reservation in employment and education sectors given the regional backwardness of the districts, sources said.

The amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution, as part of the special status to the Karnataka-Hyderabad region, will enable establishment of a regional council.

Six North Karnataka backward districts - Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur, Bidar, Koppal and Bellary - will benefit from the special status.

The provision enables the President to lay special responsibility to establish a separate development board as also help reservation in public employment through the creation of a local cadre for domiciles of the region, the sources said.

The Constitutional amendment bill will require its approval by both Houses of Parliament by a 2/3rd majority.

ive treatment is not good for others. Every region deserves equal treatment. Robbing Ram and paying Som is not fair. It must be agreed that Kharge has played a key role here.

Center's Nod to Proposal for Special Status to Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur, Bidar, Koppal and Bellary is appreciated. Let us be sporting in appreciating the good work like we from Coastal Districts are immensely benefited by Konkan Railway made possible by Shri. George Fernandes, and Coastal highways and Port Development by others.

Veerappa D N Madikeri you are correct. Mr. Karge is from Gulbarga which is the heart of Hyderabad Karnataka, and he is a hard task master unlike Dharam Singh of same district. Kharge truly has Chief Minister material ( only other leg-pullers of Congress should admit this). Gulbarga has developed a lot with all modern amenities and competing with other cities of North Karnataka like Belgaum, Hubli, Davangere. Now there is no water problem also, thanks to Karge's son Priyanka Kharge's efforts. People of Coastal districts are fully ignorant about Gulbarga city with 4 lakh population or other fast developing areas of Hyd.Ktk, and the tremendous business opportunities there.

The entire credit for this should go to Shri. Mallikarjuna Kharge the Central Labour Minister. He has done this within 3 years of becoming Central Minister what others could not do for decades.

This demand has been there from decades. After BJP came to power, the demand was intensified from last 4 years. Central Govt gave nod now because keeping next election in mind.

One has to give some thought on this. Earlier both central and State Govt was of Congress. Still they could not get this done. After BJP came to power, everything has changed. BJP has woken sleeping central Govt up.

Anyway I thank Central Govt too along with State Govt. Special thanks to Yeddiji and Kudlada Kuvara DVSji for their efforts on this. Both have worked hard for this.
