Mangalore, Sep 9 : The Mangalore police who had detained 84 people from Tamil Nadu and  thwarted all efforts to migrate them to Australia yesterday, have decided to send all the 84 detainees back to Tamil Nadu tagging them as ‘innocents’.

Addressing a press conference IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy said the police took the decision to send them after verifying their identities with the police counterparts in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.  He said among the 84 detainees 48 are Srilankan refugees (42 men, 5 women and 1 child) registered in 18 different camps of Tamil Nadu. Of the remaining 8 (all men) are unregistered refugees of Sri Lankan origin, 21 are Tamilians (7 men, 10 women and 4 children), 4 from Kerala and 3 are from Karnataka.  All these detainees will be sent back to Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in two buses after the completing all the necessary formalities in this direction.

The police produced the 13 accused before the District Magistrate and were taken for custodial interrogation.  Among the accused 9 are Srilankan refugees, 3 are Tamilians and one is a Keralite.  Madhav Suvarna, owner of “Shri Raksha” boat who had sold it to the accused,  is also detained, the IGP said.

The IGP also revealed that the detainees complained about the poor living conditions in the refugee camps in Tamilnadu which compelled them to take the drastic step of migrating to Australia.  When asked how these 84 people will be rehabilitated in Tamil Nadu Pratap Reddy said “we have done our duty and now it is the responsibility of the government to look after the refugees of these camps”.  He also added that detailed report will be sent to concerned authorities in Tamil Nadu in this connection.

Lured by  Better Lifestyle

According to the police, the 14 accused lured the 84 victims of more opportunities and better lifestyle apart from providing Australian citizenship, adding that one batch of 1000 people had already left from India. More importantly, the accused succeeded in convincing these victims by showing the photographs of the earlier batch who they presumed were having a better lifestyle. These victims were promised by the accused to take them to Christmas Island of Australia.  However, it’s learnt that there was no tie up from the other side to accept the 84 people, he maintained.

Failed Attempts

The police revealed that the  accused had tried unsuccessfully twice to send these victims to Australia from Kerala.  Both the times the accused had fled from the scene and had evaded arrest.  Having failed in Kerala and due to tough security measures in Tamil Nadu the accused thought of an alternative of sending them from Mangalore and were caught by Mangalore police.  .

Pratap Reddy said that three police personnel from Tamil Nadu along with Inspector Srinivas had come down to Mangalore from Tamil Nadu to assist the police in handling the case.

Beyond professionals, even the lowliest of Indians are fed-up of the system and its apathy in India.

Their aspirations are right. There's nothing in trying. They will succeed someday!

Good job officers, Granted it was refugees own decision to flee to Australia but who knows what was the true intention of traffickers behind sending them there....at least they are now safe in their own country, rather regret later after getting there.

It is very hurting to see these innocents fall preys to inhuman selfish brokers to put them in vessel which is not even fit for crossing rough river during monsoon season but tried to sail towards Australia. Thanks to Mangalore Police on timely action, else we would have end up receiving one more boat capsizing story with loss of almost all innocents’ illegal immigrants. Now Police Department from Srilanka, Karnataka & Tamilnadu should try to catch those culprits, put them in same vessel and ask them to sail towards Australia

Central Govt should now have direct talk with Sri Lankan government and arrive at a treaty based on Human Rights and UNO conventions and arrange to repatriate these refugees back to Sri Lanka as peace prevails now in Tamil Area of Sri Lanka and LTT is decimated and Sri Lankan govt has no excuse for not taking back these refugees.

You can imagine how innocent and gullible these people are. How on earth did they think that rusted little boat could take them to Australia?

These people were planning to claim ASYLUM is Australia. If people come to Australia by risking their lives through seas because of threat to their lives in their home country, The Australian government can grant Asylum. In recent times, many people have lost their lives in seas. Most of these people are from war hit countries such as Sri Lanka, Afghanisthan and many others. Once they are intercepted in the Australian waters, they are taken to the detention centre on Christmas Island, where the asylum seekers have to prove their claim for Asylum.

Jossytauro, mangalore/abudhabi and others don't be surprised if they can to Australia through the boat. Actually there are lot of refugees end of coming to Australia by with the help of people smugglers through boat. Australian security can't kill this people or leave them in the water once they are in the Australian territory so they detain them in the refugee camp and process their migration status. This is the UN agreement so Australia has to respect it. So some people take advantage of this and do this people smuggling business. Usually Indonesia do this job because they are close to Australia. it was surprising to see this initiated from Mangalore.

Refuges without Border: If mother itself denying everything to their children then where the children should go ? They don't know what is border and where it is ? Even though they are on the earth, their feeling is they are sailing on deep and dangerous sea.
They don't find any difference in staying in their own country or in refuge camp or sailing on Hindu Maha sagar with their broken boat. They thought that where ever they are their life in risk.
Whatever the condition of boat, they want to escape from their daily pain. Staying in mother country or in refuge camp, it is similar to their old boat sinking in middle of the Australian sea. If they reach successfully to Australian shore, they thought that new life will begin from there and their children can eat everyday and everywhere. They never care about the condition of boat on which they are sailing with their little children. Because their situation is worst than rusted boat.
I am very sad why they put down their head. This is not a crime. We have terrible political criminals, they never felt shy.
