Kundapur, Sep 10: A woman was injured while many others had a providential escape when a speeding bus missed colliding head-on with an oncoming lorry by a hair's breath, and instead swerved on to the side of the road.

The incident occured at around 2.30 pm on Monday September 10 at Hunsikatte bridge near Koni.

The Durgamba bus which was plying towards Shimoga is said to have been moving at a high speed. When it reached Hunsikatte Bridge near Koni, a lorry appeared from the opposite direction and the bus driver, unable to give enough space to the lorry to pass, swerved to his left and narrowly missed ramming into the lorry.

As the bus came to a sudden halt after skidding off the side of the road, the passengers inside heaved a sigh of relief as everyone except a lady escaped unhurt.

The injured was a admitted to government hospital in Kundapur. She is out of danger.

Both the bus driver and the conductor escaped from the accident spot.

A case is yet to be registered.

Its Gods grace that it was a lucky escape for the passengers. These buses drive recklessly at top speeds and are not bothered of the smaller vehicles that ply on the road.Every trip is dangerous with these yama dootas and neither the owners or the RTO is anywhere bothered of the safety of the passengers or regulating the speed of these buses.

SH52 - One & only the state highway which Kundapura has and its connect Shimoga district via Thirthahalli. It is supposed to widen into 4 lane road & its pending more than a decade. Kundapura is the most neglected area where as infrastructure issues are becoming worst day-by-day (including Railway Station issues). Even though we had famous elected representatives (HSS as MLA, JPH as MP and DVS as CM) benefitted nothing on infra segment!!

Nobody talks of widening the roads. How will driver not lose control when there is no space to swerve the bus in sudden emergency ? The interior roads have only one vehicle space at a time and if another vehicle comes from opposite direction then the first vehicle has to take the mud road

The private bus service between kasargod to bhatkal is such that only God has to save the passangers. The competetion between the individual buses is the mai cause for this they give bribe to get the permit and then they strt the busines in ding so they forget all the safety. Bus drivers are choosen on their merit of covering the distance at the earliest. All these routes to be operated as a cooperative transport company and profit shall be shard proportionately among the owners so that these competetions will come to an end . At the same time the RTO has to be too strick with regards to the conditions of the bus like colour, TV/ sterio, Seat width and gap between the seats, and most of the city buses of Mangalore and Udupi are running with terpaulins to the windows insted of glass which is very disgusting and most troublesome thing as the rain water and dust will get into the bus. All these can be imporved only if the Cunsumers ask for the rights and demand if needed protest and bring the system as it should be. Will the people wake up. or till such time these accidents will keep on happaening and poeple wiil pay the prise of their life.

Government should ban all the private bus and run the government bus so that the people travelling on other vehicles or those walking on roads will be safe. Accident will be reduced.

Why can't we start a mass movement against these bus companies? They are literally breaking all road safety rules each and everyday under the nose of traffic cops. And our RTO and Traffic also useless to implement strict traffic rules. We need a mass movement from public to get this right and it after all concerned to our safety on roads.

Durgamba Company woner should sack their service immediatly & handover the Driver and Conductor to Police for negligience and their inhuman behavior after the accident. This could be a lesson to all private Yama Duta bus drivers plying from Kundapur to Mangalore.

As per above report driver and conductor escaped from the spot. It is their duty to help the passengers if they hurt or need any medical assistance. if any driver or conductor run from the spot after accident their licence has to be cancelled.

I do agree after accident people will start beating the driver and conductor before starting to help the passengers who are need of medical assistance but still they cant avoid their resposiblity as the people who boarded on the bus after keeping the faith on them.

''RTO must cancel the permit for these vehicles and cancel the driving licensees of these drivers. Instead police is asked to book cases. Though there is a law and machinery to enforce law, it is not used due to corruption. I am astonished on the patience of public of Mangalore to tolerate.''

Most of the regular road users know which are the ones be trusted for their overall performance. Simply defending the under-performer is unacceptable. It is evident from the actions of the chauffeur .

Ms Reshmi Salian, Durgamba bus has speedgovernors fixed & has good management. Please notice closely the above picture, not a single glass is broken - Mohandas Kapikad..

Mohandas...what exactly you want to tell here? As per news article the bus was at high speed. If you can't control, then why the driver has to go on such a speed to endanger the lives of so many people? I have seen Durgamba buses and their reckless driving. If driver is not at fault, then why he fled from the scene? This is because of good management that is management will try to save the driver from punishment?

We can avoid such reckless/careless driving only by limiting the speed. The way to limit the speed is: when RTO issuing the license to particular bus/route at that RTO should punch the accelerator for a limited speed (40 to 50 kmph) as per the routes. Otherwise we cannot control these reckless drivers. Traffic polices are sleeping while over speeding these buses and they are not capable to do so.

Ms Reshmi Salian, Durgamba bus has speedgovernors fixed & has good management. Please notice closely the above picture, not a single glass is broken. Even the Front glass is carefully removed & the bus taken with help of crane for inspection. Perhaps, this bus transport has over 200 buses, & held with respect in Udupi-Sagar districts. Similarly Bus transport like Hanuman of Udupi, Gajanana of Sagar enjoy good reputation as they have strict management.

We don't want this dangerous transport service which is dangerous not only to the commuters but also to the people travelling on other vehicles or those walking on roads. Hope severe action will be taken against the driver who is at fault. These buses always cross the speed limits and endanger lives of people. Transport authorities are not doing anything to curb this menace instead they are hand in glouse with transport mafia.
