Moodbidri: Complete Ban on Plastic Bags from Nov 1 - C T Ravi

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (PS)

Moodbidri, Sep 11:
District incharge minister C T Ravi on Tuesday September 11 reiterated that all kinds of plastic bags will be banned in the district by November 1. "Plastic bags are the main reason for the blockage of underground drainages, hence they are the ‘modern devils’ in the society," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after the Mangalore taluk-level KDP review meeting held at Samaja Mandir in Moodbidri on Tuesday September 11.

Minister said that the complete ban order had stirred up much hue and cry in Chikmagalur district too during the initials days. "People tend to change their opinion gradually in the district too. When the ban is applicable in malls and business shops in cities like Mumbai and Surat, why can't be so in the malls of Mangalore?" he questioned.

On the issue of Naxalism in the district, C T Ravi said that Naxals do not fight for the cause of socio-economic justice, rather they believe in bullet and not ballot, hence their aim is to gain power by using their gun power, he said. "A meeting of the DCs of three districts viz DK, Udupi and Chikamagalur will be convened and representatives of state and central governments will decide on a package for the people of Naxal-infested areas," he said.

Earlier at the review meeting, C T Ravi insisted that the concerned officers must ensure that no deserving beneficiary misses out on student scholarship. He came down heavily on the agriculture department assistant director for not been informed about the salt water engulfing paddy fields in Pavanje near Haleangady. The aassistant director informed that this season 119 hectare of agriculture land was harmed by heavy rainfall. Forest department officer informed that through two nurseries 11,200 jack fruits, mangoes and other plants were distributed this year. There was a complaint that though plants were applied for, they were not distributed in Bajpe area.

C T Ravi said that there is need for opening of milk societies in each village. KMF officer informed that every day 2,18,000 litres of milk is produced in the district. On the issue of ration card distribution, the minister said that criminal cases will be registered on those who obtain ration cards through fake documents. He told the excise inspector not to spare any instance of unauthorized liquor sale.

Under Ashraya scheme, it was noted that 205 houses were still not completed despite a lapse of four years. During the meeting three notices were issued to officers of animal husbandry, social forestry (Puttur) and town planning officer of MUDA for not being present at the meeting.

Plastic bags are surely dangerous to the environment. However, these politicians talk only for the talking purpose without proper survey and without a proper guideline how to implement it and the feasibility. I am just wondering how much extra do we have to pay when they change the packaging of Nandini Milk?? If they do not change the Nandini pakcing, then they do not have the right to implement any ban on Polybags.

Just before 10 to 12 years there were no plastic bags used as it is used today. people used to carry bags from home while buying grocery and vegetables. It is a ideal move to minimise use of plastic bags but not stopping completely. Now all the shop keepers supply a plastic bag free even for a small item. Government can put heavy taxes on plastic bags to make it more expensive so that people get discouraged to use or introduce supplying government sealed & heavily taxed shopping bags with serial numbers for a expensive price. Also introduce cumpolsory black garbage bags for small price so people can use this without spoiling the road side garbage area. Replace the 1950's dirty broken garbage bins with modern ones. It is an eye sore.

Does the plastic ban really work? Awareness campaigns can't solve anything. We need a strict law that the plastic bag below 40 micron thickness is somewhat untenable. A lots of plastic cups and plates were being used in function hall or fast food restaurants in serving their customers beverages and food. Many halls dinning tables were covered by thin plastic sheets while serving meals. Some retailers or shopping malls extra chages on plastic carry bages of Rs 5 to 15 depending on the sizes and thickness.

We need a strong and concentrated campaign to curb the pollution caused by plastics. The ban on plastic bags is very hard to put in place as packaging has taken its roots in our day to day life. Moreover it is not possibles to buy milk, minaral water in a paper bag or cloth bag.
The only plastic ban won't do,experts seek law to stop littering and change our habits.

Along with ban on plastics, there is also an urgent need of controlling mindless JCB excavation work in the name of making residential sites. The one beautiful Moodabidri is soon loosing its sheen and now looks like its head tonsured.

Blockage of underground drainageis due to the hopeless planning of your govt which has built roads in places without even doing the basic piping works for which the concrete road are being dug now...what do you care right?its our money which we pay as taxes and you people rape us of our own money Mr.Ravi..This is what happens if the power is vested in the hand of a few uneducated and rest all suffer..Ther is a certain limit for plastic bags usage and based on the thickness of microns you could ban it but you like any other fool are in a hurry..Remember the great ruler Mohammed Bin Tughalak was kicked out of the throne for introducing ordinary coins which were being made in Gold and silver then..Banning of plastic is not the solution,it will just worsen the case remember it

Plastic is a dangerous substance which does'nt disolve in soil..it is better to use paper bags, jute bags which is natural & enviornmnetally safe..main root cause of the Drainage blockgae is plastic bags since plastic with other garbage stucks in sewerage lines..we as a citizen have the responsibility to keep our earth liveable for our next generation...For hundreds peoples benefit we can not ignore health of thousand people..we have to ban tobbaco,Gutkha, cigaratte, liquor altogether..look at the roads, malls, public toilets, bustands..what mess these people are doing...some one should have the currage to swim against the current for the good of the society (irrespective of opinions of the some section of the society)..i apprecaite Mr.CT Ravi inthis regard..

Mr. CT Ravi, It is not a good option to ban the plastic bags. What back up plan you have for dumping the waste/garbage at least we have a option to put our waste/garbage in the plastic bag and tie and it at the garbage ring, If you ban plastic we have no option to dump garbage openly and it is unhygienic. Think twice before you implement this rule. Keep Mangalore city clean and tidy.

Mr Ravi, Please go across the city and check the dustbins over here. 90% of the dustbins are broken and the waste is covered for atleast 20 metres from the dustbin. The Govt is so poor to provide new dustbins to the city. First make the system proper, rather than ruining the life of many businessmen's of the district. Unlike from Chickmaglur, Mangalore has more plastic industries and traders, as it is a port city. Few other states like Kerala is dependent on these traders. The ban on plastic will indirectly affect the other businesses in mangalore.

Mr Ravi, I would request you to make a survey on this before banning it. Also check why countries like Australia doesn't ban plastics. If you are still lazy to do an survey, atleast go online and check why doesn't the western countries ban plastics. The system in the district should be changed, it shouldn't be that, you and your officials are so lazy to change the system, Finally you end up attacking the traders.
