Mangalore: Fallen Tree Chokes Traffic on Shiradi Ghat, Passengers in a Fix

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (PS)

Mangalore, Sep 12: Passengers on their way to Bangalore via Shiradi Ghat on the night of Tuesday September 11 faced tough times, as a tree that fell on the ghat road blocked all traffic leading to inordinate delays.

The buses bound from Mangalore to Bangalore were stuck at Shiradi Ghat all night after a tree fell due to the weather.

The buses departed from Mangalore on Tuesday night, and as per schedule should have reached Bangalore on Wednesday morning.

Most of the passengers are those returning to work after spending a festive weekend in their hometowns.

As per latest reports, the traffic is said to be gradually clearing, and movement of buses has resumed. However, the passengers have been forced to miss a day's work and had to wait throughout the night.

    Mr.Dinesh Pujary Kundapur/Bangalore,

The Western Ghats are nothing compared to the difficulty of building durable roads in some other countries. For example, here in Switzerland they have 4 Lane Eaxpressways going up and through the Alps which are much taller than the Western Ghats. The roads cost money and mainly technical expertise to build. But they last very long time. 3000 Crores is nothing compared to he amount of money that was looted in illegal mining and sending the ores through the Shiradi Ghat and ruining it. 10% of that amount as a fee would be enough to build the elevations and the tunnels needed for a decent two lane road, never mind a 4 lane expressway.

Shiradi Ghat on the Mangalore/ Bangalore route is with frequent traffic jams thanks to the BAD AND NARROW roads.
But pray, look at the NH 17 drive on this road and you will know what I mean. Leave Goa and drive down to Karwar roads are very good and well maintained Karwar to Kumta the road is just good, though with stretches of potholes but THEN after leaving Kumta there is hardly a 2 km stretch that is good for the next 150 kms.It is crater ridden with potholes nearly 2 ft deep and with the rain water in them, vehicle drivers are caught in no mans land-stuck in a pothole.Such a horrible drive for the next 7 hours that one can only curse/ pray pray/curse on this back breaking stretch of NATIONAL HIGHWAY 17 linking Mumbai to Kanyakumari.
One would think the National Highway is the responsibilty of the Centre but I see here that the job is paid for by the Centre but has to be maintained by the State with funds provided by the former.
Where is the MP from this area (Kumta to Kallianpur)is he blind or deaf or dumb- where are the MLA's from this area- going on study tours around the world at the cost of the tax paying public.
We saw 11 accidents along this 150 km stretch leave alone numerous other 2 wheelers toppling over.
The less said about the KSRTC buses the better as the drivers have absolutely no consideration for the poor passengers & their safety (will not mention non existant comfort).
Can someone throw light where I could find out how much was outlaid by the Centre for this stretch of National Highway in 2011/12 and how/where this money was expended (and to whom) for maintaining this National Highway?
Do not blame the rains as surely Goa gets as much rain surely the Udupi/Mangalore stretch gets the same amount of rain surely the first 100 kms of the Kerala part of this highway gets the same amount of rain.
WHY THEN THE DISGRACEFUL STATE OF THE KUMTA/ UDUPI STRETCH YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT.
Can someone throw light on this

the reason for the traffic jam on the Shiradi ghats was that the logs of trees had fallen out of the truck , thus creating a chaos, There was no communication system. We need to have some communication system to be installed on the ghats so that if there any kind a accident can be reported

@Joy, Udupi - Life is not based on ASSUMPTIONS!!! You mention congress MIGHT have given the funds and BJP MIGHT have swallowed it!!! Grow up!!! The best roads of Blore to Mlore was during Vajapayee & Krishna's rule around 2001-2004 and then the mining lobby started and after that the roads never existed!!! People have been going through this HELL since then!!! Coming back to the TOPIC, the block was due to the felling of a TREE and not due to the bad roads which now every human being has become immune to this roads!!!

Mr. Santhosh, Just to enlighten you abit. The NH 48 is a Central Govt. road , I agree. But when it comes for maintenance etc, the Central funds are routed through the State PWD.That's where our State politicians make hay & money! Please note this. You could confirm what I've written with any Central Govt.official.This is a standard procedure with every Dept.getting funds from the Centre.

I do not understand one thing, how can we blame some one, for a fallen tree on a road. its not due to bad road or something, and this road has been reconstructed and widen in some places, with concrete road. All this happened in BJP govt. not in other Govt times.

I faced this veichle block today in the morning while coming form bangalore. Its not the tree fell on the road. Traffic block was due to small accident occured in the narrow curve road - truck which was carrying log fell into the road. Roads are in worst condition Govt is sleeping. Sollution is Express four lane like Mumbai to Pune. When Kandla ghat can be express highway. why not Shiridi Ghat??

Unfortunately I was traveling to Bangalore yesterday in Durgamba bus. We reached Shiradi Ghat area at 12:30 AM. Till 7 AM we were standing there only. At 7, our bus started moving, but there was a long queue of buses and trucks for about 10-15 Kms. It took one hour from there to get into normal speed. Finally we reached Bangalore at 1:30 PM.

I never did day travel in NH48 so far. I had a curiosity to watch Ghat section. Today my dream was fulfilled. The 4 lane stretch between Bangalore and Hassan is awesome. We can't expect the same between Mangalore and Hassan because it is like a sinusoidal wave. Digging the ghat section for a tunnel is the only option. This was proposed by DVS and it is going to cost Rs 3000 Crores. Hope this will materialize soon.

Those who are blaming BJP..FYI...Shiradi ghat - NH48 comes under Central Govt (National Highways Authority of India), It is our central Govt delaying in giving the approval & release of fund inspite of our state ministers efforts....have some knowledge before posting nonsence comments.

Mr.Ashok, please induct the latest longest/luxury buses which have kitchen, toilet etc.,(those introduced in Mysore-Bngalore line)in Bangalore Mangalore route to enable the passengers to be stranded in shiradi ghat henceforth to pass the horrible nights peacefully.
My strong point is that we can make top class luxury buses but not good roads. We can open good hotels...but no know how to produce good masala dasas!!!
    It is our fate!!!

Rightly said Denis. When the road was closed, I used to drive to Mangalore and back every weekend. I saw the roads being repaired. But the quality of the job was beyond anyone's imagination. It is wrong to call the job pathetic. It was beyond that. It reflected the character of the politicians, who promise so many things yet deliver none. Its just blame game for them. The end user has been the sufferer. Yet we are forced to pay so many types of taxes and cess, which God too may not know where it all goes. Our roads are bad, or medical facilities are bad, we got to beg & bribe for every single thing that we need and which is our right. We rape our planet of its natural resources just for the politicians to make enough money to last a hundered generations.

We as a human race are just down the lane to self destruction. So what is the use? We as a human race cannot even sustain ourselves through our ignorance, what is the use of projects like project tiger, project corridor, project kamala, project congress, etc etc. First give us our due lousy politicians and then do whatever you got to do.
I say this because I had to resign from a job because of this road condition.

THIS IS REALLY EMBARASSING. WHOLE NIGHT HAULT IN GHATS WITHOUT FOOD AND SLEEP AND THE TENSION TO REACH BANGALORE ON TIME FOR THE WORK OR ON EMERGENCY IS REALLY DIFFICULT.

THE PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT OF BJP GOVT IN KARNATAKA IS A BIG BIG ARYABATTA'S ZERO.

BLAMING AND POINTING FINGERS ON CENTRAL GOVT ALWAYS FOR NOT AUTHORIZING THE FUNDS IS FOOLISHNESS. WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY. ALLOTING CRORES OF FUNDS IN THE NAME OF FARMERS AND POCKETING THOSE SANCTIONED MONEY IS THE ONLY DRAMA BJP GOVT DOES IN KARNATAKA. APART FROM THAT NOTHING IS DONE, NO ROADS, NO PROPER STREET LIGHTS, NO DRINAGE FACILITIES, NO LAW AND ORDER, NO ENCOURAGEMENT FOR SOCIAL WORK. GOD SHOULD SAVE US FROM THIS GOONS.

    Dear Denis
There is absolute peace in the 'WILD' forests.Unrest is prevalent now only where mankind dwells. We have become 'wild' with  beast like tendencies. The calm 'WILD' is dwindling and the civilised(so called!)'WILD' is  increasing! That includes all even your environmentalists....

When L&T had given a proposal to construct the Ghat road,Then CM Mr. Kumar swamy was worried because L&T would not give any commission. Now When the road is done so nice from Hassan to Blore i cant understand why cant they spend some money on this stretch. Its not State Govt it is the nationals highways ahomas to do this. Why cant they do the Shiradi Ghats like Kandala (Tunnels)?

Nothing new.The ghat road was closed for 9 months in one stretch during the JDS / BJP rule. But nothing was done to widen the road to 30 metres.Yet politicians made money.

Overnight environmentalists talk big things. We must also think of the public / economy etc.If we only allow trees, elephants, tigers, deer, bison etc to survive then who will be interested in widening the road ? In Africa wild animals are killed by the Govt.to maintain a balance in population. That's the reason animals are straying into villages in India. Its just not shortage of prey in the forests. When population of animals increase in the forest there is a fight for territory too.
