It is nice to see the growth of Mangalore Port over the years.

Working for one of the larger ports on the East Coast of USA, it gives me great pleasure to also see tonnage growth in my hometown.

But what frightens me is that by looking at the picture, the wood is strewn haphazardly with chip pieces of wood at the side which is a fire hazard. All it takes is just a spark!!

It is nice to see growth but at what cost? What measures are taken for safety of Port as well as employees is more important factor rather than growth.

I am sure in the coming years this areas are improved to avoid being sued due to negligence. India will soon catch up for suing in such accidents and the governemnt will have more controls on such factors before they operate the port area for SAFETY.

Money & statistical figures are not enough in the long run but better facilities and operational logistics provided.

Import of timber from abroad thru many many shiploads is a good sign that India is prepared to save all the forest land and encourage the importation of timber from other countries.

As much as the imported wood will remain expensive, saving our forest land and our trees will be more beneficial for the country.

It is fascinating to watch truckloads of imported timber being transported to different parts of Karnataka, Kerala and elsewhere from the port of Mangalore.

Our ultimate objective of saving the forest is fulfilled, and the Government and the people are on the right track of mind.
