Udupi: Rise in Cases of Missing Girls a Cause for Concern

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (VM)

Udupi, Sep 14: Cases of missing girls seem to be rising at an alarming rate in the coastal region. Almost every day, a young girl, mostly in the age group of 18-25 is being reported missing. Some of them are lucky enough to be found alive, some turn up on their own, perhaps having married, some of them meet tragic ends while some remain untraced.

In yet another case, a 21-year old girl has gone missing since Tuesday September 11.

It is learnt that the girl, identified as Shivaranjini, had left home at 8 am in the morning of September 11 to Manipal in search of job, but never returned home.

A case has been registered at the Udupi city police station.

She is five feet tall, has a wheatish complexion and is able to converse in Kannada, Tamil, English, Hindi and Tulu.

On the same day, September 11, a 24-year-old married girl by name Sangeetha went missing, only to be found dead on Thursday September 13 along with another man. The case, though thought to be one of suicide, is now suspected to be a murder.

On September 5, another girl Danavanthi (25) went missing after she left home to visit a temple in the morning. In August Vijayalaxmi, Priyanka, Bhagyashree, Sweenal Hels and many more went missing without any trace. It is to be noted that in most cases the girls were employed, and disappeared after leaving home for work or on the way back.

What happens to these girls is anybody's guess. Many a time they turn up married, while some unfortunate ones are found dead. The sufferers are the parents who would have no clue where their daughters disappeared to, or why.

Nearly fifty girls have been reported missing this year already. In several cases, families hesitate to file complaints due to social stigma, and hence the actual number may well be more than the official statistics. The police say that most of the girls are traced and that in majority of the cases the reason for disappearance would be love affairs. Nevertheless, considering the crimes against women reported now and then, it is a matter of grave concern when young girls go missing all of a sudden.

Basically the girls and their families are responsible for this phinomena. There is nothing much the police or society can do about this.

ALL I see here are comments from educated people who are either blaimg parents or system or sharing statistics. C'mon people, did not anyone read the report that said, most of the parents hesitate to file a complaint because of fear of social stigma!! There are so many clubs, organizations, ROtary, Lions , Jaycees, Sanghas etc. For what? To conduct Tea parties and foster communalism ?? Im not criticizing here, but merely trying to vent my frustration at the alarming rate our nation, the very crux of of society based on women, mothers etc is being attacked by our very own people. We often seem to target religions , communities , per say if a person was arrested and his name was " Rahim", then we say a muslim thats why he does this. If a " Robert" is arrested then we say " Oh useless buggers hell bent on religious conversions, this is what they always do and what not!! We are the Only Nation in the whole world thriving on secular beliefs and actions, Thus Far!!! There is place for people of all backgrounds, color, race, community etc in this country. United we Stand and divided we fall. Countries like China and Pakistan have a clear cut agenda of breaking our country into 29 Different Countries. How can we allow that. Its so easy that these people will hire our own men , our sons, our husbands, fathers to steal our daughters, sisters and push them down an AByss!! Its time all Organizations started educating the poor communities and isolated livers in our society that they can approach any organization if someone is missing from their homes. Much better, educate them to look for so called signs among daughters and look for ways to prevent such happenings. Life is precious and we live only once. How can we allow our very own daughters to DIE !??? How can we as neighbours just stand and watch as mute spectators??!! People , if you keep watching and pretend that such things will not your family, then its only a matter of time before it spreads lie an epidemic. Beware!!

Parents should never force girls to get married. If unmarried girls have no job then insecurity develops. Relationship between Parents & unmarried girls should be very strong

All these girls are the victims of Dowry-Devil, and also victims of inhuman Caste System in our society. If a girl remains unmarried even till the age of 35 and inter-caste marriage is a taboo even in these modern days, what else she can do?

As per sources, out of the missing girls traced,90% cases are due to love affairs, the rest due to extra marital affairs and harassment.Out of the non-traced,a few could be trapped by the goons for illegal activities.
Eradication of cast-ism,dowry system, freedom for girls to their line in the field of education, employment, and their life partner would reduce this hide and seek game.
Parents should be more literate in these issues.

I do not agree with those who say here and blame parents for all this.
The boys/girls study in schools/colleges far away from their homes. Atmosphere has changed from the olden ones, where people knew each other and used to talk to each other - communication - and were able to trace movements of their children
Now-a-days such communication is not there. New people settle, people from abroad buy property around, build houses and are not ready to communicate.
All the more, Parents are engrossed in their work from morn till evening, to earn more for their children education. They cannot leave their place of work to monitor movements of their children.
I wonder presently how many parents of college going children can advise, correct or take action against them
Saying things, blaming parents for not correcting their children from wrong doing, is so easy, if they are children of some other parents!!!
It is the responsibility of the children, to take care of themselves, talk to their parents on daily basis, about their problems/requirements.
If such communication exists between parents/children, then lot of problems can be solved and mishaps can be avoided

Parents need to observe and watch the behaviour and movements of their children carefully. They should know which place children left out and purpose also. There are also criminals who spoil and export girls outside. Good family atmoshpere is very important. Children should learn and respect good culture. This is a responsibilty of every parent.

karnataka govt and police of mangalore should take this as a seriouse matter and try to locate these girls, many times these innocent girls are traped by crock man or woman to give them job or make false promises of maraige and push them for prostitution. So parents should keep a watch on there female childrense what they are doing and should be friendly to them so that they tell them all there problems,by this we can save our childrense from falling into wrong traps.

This matter is very strange, the people of living in the coastal area are more educated then any other region of the state. If this educated girls goes missing means, there is lack of awerness among these girls. sometime love story, poverty, unemployemnt all these task make these girls go away from home but this is not the solution for problems. by doing this these girls put everybody in concern.First goverment must provide someshort of employment to these educated girls by doing so there will be a change in the life.

The problem is 'inefficiency to keep pace with the changing times and environment'.The fear that they are losing out on 'something great' if they do not 'act'immediately. Just a case of 'grass being more green on the neighbour's lawn'nothing else. Proper grooming and a complex free childhood goes a long way to help. Unfortunately in the last two decades not many a 'child'has
been not been 'cuddled'close to a mother's heart and brought up.The 'feel'of the mother's chest brings up a contended child. He or she will then not seek the 'elusive' elsewhere. The roots of the problems are at our 'door-steps'. No need for research elsewhere.
