Mangalore: Need Stringent Measures to Curb Cyber Crime - IGP

Mangalore, Sep 14: Pratap Reddy, IGP (Western Range) inaugurated a seminar on ‘Cyber Crime’ here at Roshni Nilaya, School of Social Work on Friday September 14.

Pratap Reddy also unveiled the logo of the forensic department of Roshni Nilaya on the occasion.

Sophia N Fernandes, principal presided over the function. B Ashok, dean of UG, DR LN Bhat, registrar, Dr Jacintha D’Souza, former principal shared the dais.

In his keynote address, Pratap Reddy said that there is a need for detailed discussion on
cyber crime so as to create awareness among the people. "Any modification in the document of a system or user will result in cyber crime. Most of the cyber cases take place due to the negligence of the user which may result in security threats to their confidential and sensitive data," he said.

"Out of the total 100 million mobile users, as many as 40 percent use value added services like e-mail, e-banking and various others which make them easy targets of hackers," he added.

"Stringent measures to curb cyber crimes is the need of the hour especially considering the booming rate of cyber crimes that are not restricted by geographical limitations or national boundaries," he opined.

He said cyber crime poses more challenges to experts in tracing the culprit as it can be committed from any part of the world, unlike other offenses where the accused has to be near the victim. "Another challenge in tracing the hackers is constant change in technology," he added.

"A day's seminar will not make anyone an expert, but it will definitely create awareness among the listeners," he said, and wished success to the meaningful initiative taken by the College.

B Ashok spoke briefly on cyber crime and said that the seminar will have four sessions like cyber crime and its types, cyber law, technology to combat cyber crime and finally, public participation.

The sessions on cyber crime will be addressed by experts like M D Sharath, inspector, CID, Bangalore, Dr A Mohan Ram from Kuvempu University and Abhishek Goyal, SP of Dakshina Kannada.

The day-long deliberation on cyber crime, a UGC sponsored state-level seminar has been organized by the department of criminology and forensic science and secretarial practice in collaboration with Western Range of police.

Saritha, lecturer of criminology department welcomed the gathering, Shafina, Shwetha compered and Jayasha delivered the vote of thanks.
