Iron Ore Export Scam: CBI Registers Five Cases, Raids Firms

Bellary/New Delhi Sep 15 (PTI): The CBI has registered five cases in connection with illegal iron ore export scam worth Rs 2500 crore and carried out searches at 17 locations, including in the premises of associates of jailed mining baron G Janardhan Reddy, today.

Acting on the orders of Supreme Court which asked the agency to probe the scam, the agency registered five cases and a preliminary enquiry against firms and exporters allegedly related with illegal mining and export of nearly 50 lakh metric tonnes of iron ore from Belekeri port in Karnataka, CBI sources said.

The agency carried out searches at 17 locations in Bangalore, Karwar, Hospet and Goa.
A 10-member CBI team searched the houses of Karapudi Mahesh, Swastik Nagaraj and Somasekhar, who runs a transport firm, all aides of Reddy, the sources said.

Raids are being conducted in Sandur Taluk of mine-rich Bellary district also, they said.

Those companies whose premises were searched today include ILC industries, Dream Logistics, SB Logistics , Sri Malikaarjuna Shipping, Greentex Industries, they said.

The Supreme Court had questioned the Karnataka government as to how law enforcing agencies, particularly the CB-CID, were unaware of illegal mining on such a huge scale in its own forest reserves and transportation of minerals to the Belekeri port by using around five lakh trucks over a period of 17 months.

It is alleged that the iron-ore was transported to Belekeri Port between January 1, 2009 and May 31, 2010 and exported to foreign companies especially China and Pakistan.

The Apex court had appointed a Central Empowered Committee(CEC), which recommended an in depth investigation of the mining and exports of the ore.

The two CEC reports of April 27 and September six had suggested a probe to find out officials responsible for various associated illegalities and thereafter to take appropriate follow up action against erring exporters, suppliers, transporters, stockyard personnel and officials.

In the September six report, the CEC recommended that CBI must investigate all aspects of the illegalities associated with raising, transportation, sale and purchase, storage and disposal of about 3.4 mn tonnes of iron ore exported from January 1, 2009 to May 31,2010 by four exporters.

I am always curious to know what does Govt do with these huge amounts recovered through scams, raids etc? How I wish Govt could use this amount for betterment and development of society. Anyways all these big monies are looted from public money, it might as well go back to public.
Politicians and these big wigs are busy fleecing public and filling their pockets, to ensure three to four generations after them have enough and more to spend..!!

Yes, CID should also be made a party to the crime since they tried to protect the real culprits. If a common man gives shelter to a thief then he is also booked by Police. Then why the same logic should not be applied to CID & CCB. When a criminal is being escorted by constable to the Court and if that criminal hoodwinks the constables and escapes, those constables are immediately placed under suspension. Apply same rules to CID officers also. CBI should also subject CID officials to interrogation to find out exactly which politician pressurized them to protect the real culprits. The public has right to know who it is.

Since Karnataka CCB investigated this case for 18 months and scanned through more than one lakh papers, still they were not able to prove the crime of High profile politicians and Industrialists of Mumbai-Goa-Karnataka. They were just preparing to put charge-sheet on some lower level Officers of Karwar Port and provide escape route to Politicians and Industrialists. Hence this CCB-CID should also be considered as a collaborator in this crime and CBI should make them also a party to the Offence in their FIR. Protecting the Culprits by Law enforcing agencies is a bigger offence than actual offenders.

In such a huge Inter-State scam why the others who are hand in gloves with the Reddy brothers are roaming free. The public is made to believe that the whole scam was a one man show? Why don’t the police arrest and put behind the bar all the other members of the looted cartel including the corrupt administrative officials who had the blessings of the BJP Govt and Central leader Sushma Swaraj.
Sir! Just delayed is justice denied.

Notable point is the Iron wore was exported to our very much friendly neighbors - China & Pakistan. What is great friendship by party with a difference - BJP with our neighboring countries. Now it is clear what made our ex-'cheap' minister and Gadkari to visit China. If BJP is ruling India, we do not need external enemies to destroy India.
