Mangalore, Sep 16:
Deepika (17) a second year PU student died at a private hospital in Kotekar on Sunday September 16, allegedly due to negligence of the doctors.

She had developed severe stomach pain on Friday night at around 10 pm, and vomited for about several times. She was later admitted in J S Hospital in Kotekar.

However, as the doctor was absent, a nurse had to attend to the the patient. Deepika was injected glucose, but she suffered a blackout.

It was only on Saturday September 15 at around 10 am that Dr Vijay Kumar came to check her. Later, a specialist doctor was called. She was prescribed medicine for gastric ailment, it is said. Vomiting stopped and she also consumed some fruits.

However, on Sunday morning at around 5 am, her mother Ravikala who accompanied Deepika called home and informed that she was in a serious condition. Deepika soon breathed her last.

Angered over the alleged negligence of the doctors, relatives of the deceased gathered in large numbers and even vandalized the hospital, it is learnt.

Relatives of the deceased alleged that she was given 14 injections during the course of her treatment.

Ullal police told Daijiworld that a case of negligence by the doctors has been registered based on the complaint filed by a relative.

Sad to hear this. Truth is come if this case is carefully analysed and Post mortem conducted. Hospital infrastructure and Manpower need to be verified. Qualifications of the nurses n doctors etc need to b e verified. Court case will take a long time. DHO and DC along with SHO of the Police station has to act. IMA has a responsibility to help the victim and the hospital and public at large. Finally choose the hospital carefully.

In olden days the Doctors used to say "Rogi Devo Bhava", and Patients used to say " Vaidya Devo Bhava". Now neither Doctor considers patients as God, nor Patients consider Doctor as God. Every where only money matters.
While joining Medical Course on the first day the students have to take an Oath that he will serve the mankind without selfishness, but it is forgotten immediately after starting practice.

    Hi Shafeeq
In your comments you have stresed the importance of investigating the case prior to passing judgements but you seem to have done just that from your base in Yorkshire without knowing the facts of the case.A proper investigation is however required to find out the facts relating to her sad death.
May lord give her family enough strength to overcome this terrible loss.

Medical field has become commercial. There is competion among doctors, and Nursing Hmes Doctors, Hospitals want big money, Labs. are getting commision. Doctors must stick to their Basic Priciple, and understand thier Responsibilities.

Doctors are supposed to save life of a patient. Indian medical association should take stringent disciplinary action against such a doctor. Even though i am not a doctor, it is suspected symptoms of appendicitis the poor child has suffered from. Hope this doctor is a PANADOL doctor and has obtained his degree and approval duly authenticated by Indian medical Association by fluke. He (The killer doctor) doesnt know medical ethics

Sad news. A flower is faded away before it could bloom and spread it's fragrance around. This tragic death could have been avoided by taking the patient to another hospital. May the departed soul of DEEPIKA rest in peace.

most nurisng homes in and arround managlore are of substandarad with no real facilities, No proper resident doctors and consultants hardly take any interest in the care of pateints. I feel Mangalore corporation must check all nursng and make sure they have poper facilities . Every life is precious. The police must punish the guilty however big they are,,,,,,

Nurses are not suppose to give any medication without the order of a doctor (atleast a duty doctor. In this particular case, why the pt was not admitted ? and treated as an inpatient.

Life is Precious. I am very sorry about the girls death. In Mangalore many small hospitals have come like mushrooms. Most of them are not according to the norms of Health Department. No proper faclities, medicines and doctors. Most of the duty doctors are interns who have temporary Registration of MCI and are permitted to work in Medical college hospitals recognized by MCI . Most of them do part time job in small nursing homess as duty doctors.Health ministry has to take stringent action against such hospital who employ interns as duty doctors. It is not the first time such incidence are happening. Hope the Government wakes up and take necessary action to curb such crimes. No patient should die because of doctors negligence. It is a culpable homicide punishable under IPC section.

    Hi Shafeeq,

I dont think it is fair to make such assumptions sitting several thousand miles away. Loss of a life is a tragic incident to not only the near and dear ones but also devastating to the treating doctors. I hope you as a doctor would appreciate it. I for once am not condoiong the events that have taken place, but to be "Judge and Jury" without knowing all the details is very unfair. Let the relevant authorities inveastigate the incident and punish the guilty if any.
You are priviledged to be working in an environment (National Health Service of the UK)which is probably one of the best in the world. Yes it would be everyone's dream to have a similar system in our "Motherland", but in reality you and I know that this is not the case. Yes the system may not be ideal and the facilities may not be adequate in these hospitals but I'm sure they are doing their best to serve the local community.
Now if you are wondering, I too am a doctor working in the NHS.
May the departed soul rest in eternal peace and the "Lord Almighty" give the family all strength to bear this immense loss.

Shafeeq Leeds, you are absolutely correct. In India, doctors are like Mafia, or in native language they say "Doctor is Dakoo" (Dakoo=decoits). They do not want to lose the patient, so they make the relatives lose the patient forever. There are no proper Laws in India to make the Doctors responsible for such greediness.

May her soul RIP..i am also a 17 year old student i feel sorry for her parents. But before calling it as a medical negligence, let authorities investigate like post mortem, police investigation and make a decision.Lots of time doctors save patients' life without complications which usualy goes unnoticed. This kind of vandalisation may hamper the small hospitals to give emergency treatment for the realy required before he is shifted to a major hospital.

May her sould rest in peace. I am a docotr myslef and I think we should investigate the matter before commenting anything. I have the doctors in Mangalore are like a mafia, They do not refer the case to another physician even if it is beyond thier expertise. They try to play with peoples life till the last minute and experiment the treatment options. They don't want to lose a patient to another physician. Looking at the images I am sure this so called Hospital might not be even having a Xray but would be doing complex surgeries like Transplant surgery

It is mandatory for any hospital to have a doctor at all times. Nurses should not accept a patient if there is no doctor. Also if a doctor/hospital think that they cannot handle the case they should inform the patient/family without delay. This is the only way to avoid such tragegies in the future.
