Dubai, Sep 21: Three budding Engineers Krati Bhargava, Prajwal Praveen, Shaikh Abubakkar from MIT (Dubai campus), as part of their final year project, have created "Automated Hydro-Jack" system that operates with a button fitted on the dashboard. The electronic control unit activates the hydraulic jack automatically.

The trio wanted to build something which would help the motorist as well as the technicians and they zeroed in on the project "Automated Hydro-Jack".

According to Prajwal, "In today’s world, with the increasing level of technology, the effort being put into to produce any kind of work has been continuously decreasing. The efforts required in achieving the desired output can be effectively and economically be decreased by the implementation of better designs. Our survey with regard to several automobile garages, revealed the facts that mostly some difficult methods were adopted in lifting the vehicles for reconditioning as well as when the tire is punctured."

"We concentrated mainly on this difficulty, and hence a suitable electronic control unit has been designed, such that the vehicles can be lifted from the ground without application of any impact force. By operating the button in the dashboard, the electronic control unit activates the hydraulic jack automatically," say Krati and Abubakker who are equally excited as Prajwal on the final outcome.

It works on the principle of Pascal’s law, which states that, "Pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure ratio remains the same".

In this project, a hydraulic pump has been integrated with the piston and cylinder arrangement and the electricity needed for the operation is taken from the battery of the vehicle and thereby increasing the mechanical advantage.

The team was assisted by Dr S V Kota Reddy who is the chairperson of the engineering department at MIT Dubai campus. "It gives me immense pleasure to talk about our final year students' innovative project on 'Hydraulic Jack for a Car'.  It was an excellent idea to place a hydraulic jack to wheels to lift the car without any manual effort when the tyre gets punctured. The students have designed, fabricated and tested the system successfully. This kind of system is highly useful in the automobile industry.  We are trying file for an international patent on this innovative idea," he said.

Words from the director of Manipal University Dubai, Dr Ramjee - "I am delighted at this ingenious invention which I am sure will become a common feature in all our vehicles to be driven in future. This is indeed a true testament to these young engineer’s creativity and imagination."

Experiment is fine but don't invent what is already invented by advanced countries and put in Daiji Word because the world is watching Daijiworld. The world may surprised at us for not know knowing the inventions already are common in use in many parts of the world. Mr. Canute Pinto Mangalore/Dubai comment sounds great and "Atlas Copco boomer" search in google (images) shows the invention is made probably made over 100 years ago and here we see just as fresh. Daiji world must be double check before publishing such inventions.

Excellent guys. This is what we need. We need more innovators than people who just follow.

    Congratulations.
    Good invention and valuable comments.
Are we ready to introduce a new concept in vehicles, where we can use 80% of weight on wheels, as a pushing force instead of pulling it, with force (of expensive energy)?
Do we need a clean environment which is free from air pollution and sound pollution, by vehicles?
Are we ready for a world of difference, by breaking the centuries old automobile evolution?
Please respond, if our qualified engineers and experienced mechanics are interested? Kind regards

    @Rakesh Fernandes, Bangalore,
good one. but system can be manged such like the jack operates only when engine is off.

It is not an good idea because it occupy all space of the boot. Power car jacks invented many decades ago and inspiration has been taken out of it. It is not an invention but experiment. There are cars built with individual jaks behind every wheel to lift up each corner up to replace the wheel, Fix or mend. Earth moving equipments very commonly built with hydrolic jacks, search for Atlas copco boomer for image and watch closely to the wheels and you will find it. There is also mini hydrolic jack invented many decades ago(portabale)which can fit in the the spare tyre well left out space and fulfill the purpose accurately.

This is an innovation alright! But there are many questions. 1) Is it cost effective? When a tiny hydraulic jack can do the same job.2)Installation of hydraulic cylinders? Trunk space is lost. Where to install front ones? 3) Very very important. This is only useful for tire change. What if you need to fix something on the engine, exhaust etc. Hydraulics to work engines needs to run. 3) Valuable fuel waste when you are changing tires-engine needs to run. 4) Safety concerns: working with the engine running may be unsafe 5) If you have changed tires you know you need to lift the car just to clear the ground so that you don't have to lift the tire too high and fight with that (align in in the stud holes) Manual jack is very handy for this purpose. Pump/release a little and you are set. Can the modern day engineers answer these questions?

congratulation to the team, this useful innovation will give a support to the mechanics, as well as the driver while tyre got punctured, and the doubt about the button built on the dashboard, it may be pressesd bymistake it will be risky on the way, i think the button will be placed with the secure cover designed on the dashboard.

I have already given my comments that this is not an invention as claimed by Dr. Ramjee since similar project has been taken up by Nitte Engineering College (NMAMIT) in the year 2002 but Daijiworld is simply not interested to publish my comment. How mean of you people at Daiji World

Good innovation. Keep the switch at the boot and not on the dashboard. This will prevent accidental operation. Anyway one need not use jack while driving.

This is not new. It has been in the market for more than 35 years. Most of the heavy vehicles in United States are equipped with this type of equipment. Even four wheel drives like Nissan, Toyota are equipped.

Congrats young engineers.....Good innovation. Instead of fixing 4 Hydraulic pistons / pumps for 4 wheels, its better to design one stronger hydraulic piston in the middle of the car that can lift the whole car.It will be cheaper and easy to maintain one piston than 4. I have seen this one piston hydraulic jack fixed in the center of a Mahindra jeep in Mangalore, which not only lifts the jeep but also rotates the jeep in a stand still position, you can turn the jeep using this jack without using the reverse gear.

Congrats, There are some technical flaws i seen, Three points ground with evenely lifted make more static balance to the stationery vehicle. In your demo, vehicle tend to move front without provided some thing in front wheel. Like wise to the rear when front is lifted. Try practical and get feedback from user to modify design.

Its a great achievement and congrats to the whole team. Don't you think when both the rear or front tyres are lifted, if there is no support the vehicle will slip away?. Usually when a tyre is changed, the vehicle stands in three tyres thereby having a solid grip. Hope such a mechanism does exist in your design but not displayed or explained well in the news.

Good invention but cannot imagine the consequence of an inadvertent operation at high speed.
Foremost, fail safe Interlocks needs to be considered.
    I repeat Failsafe interlocks.

Congrats to the trio on this very useful invention. It is a good idea to have this facility on all cars, so that tyres can be changed quickly.Recommend car manufactures to implement this in all new car models for both front and rear tyres. Thanks and all the best.
