Bangalore: 'State Won’t Allow FDI in Retail'

Bangalore, Sep 23 (DHNS):
The State government has decided not to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail as it may hurt the interest of farmers and small traders in the State.

Addressing reporters here on Saturday, Agriculture Marketing Minister S K Bellubi compared FDI to the entry of erstwhile East India Company which eventually led to colonisation of the country by the British.

He said the State government has now realised the adverse consequences of allowing the German trade and retail giant Metro to open its cash and carry wholesale centre in Bangalore by amending the APMC Act a few years ago.

FDI in retail may benefit a small section of people, but it doesn’t serve the interest of a vast majority. “We have decided that we do not need it,” he said.

The minister said the government has decided to adopt electronic tendering system of National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited in 50 APMC markets in the State to sell 11 important produces: tur, copra, turmeric, dry chillies, raisin, rice, arecanut, maize, groundnut, cotton and sunflower.

The first phase of work has already been completed in Gulbarga, Tiptur, Tumkur, Arsikere and Bijapur APMC markets. The system will ensure that farmers get a competitive price for their produce, said Bellubi.

In addition, a maize technology park in Ranebennur, integrated rice technology park at Karatagi in Gangavati taluk of Koppal district, tur technology park in Gulbarga and coconut technology park, including coconut products research and development unit will be established at Tiptur in  Tumkur district.

He said that an onion and potato wholesale market development project at a cost of Rs 102 crore is being implemented on 67 acres of land at Dasanapura near Bangalore.

Need to raise in salary for ministers and in one session it is passed in the parliament

Need to raise in Salary, Benefits to the public then discussion over discussion is made how to stop it as pubic will gain

People are educated and know what is right and wrong

F.D.I. will bring more and more opportunities to public by increasing employment with better salaries and benefits

Middle man will be skipped (as you see its the majority of politician who are involved with middle man business) for eg: lets consider some vegetable which is sold in the market for around 30Rs/kg is bought from a farmer for hardly 4 to 5 Rs

Where as if there is Direct Investment between the farmer and the consumer then it benefits for both the farmer and the consumer as the product which is sold for 30Rs is bought for 15 Rs and is sold for 20 to 22 Rs where as the farmer benefits a increase in his gain and the consumer pays less for the product they sell and buy

we benefit with fresh vegetable as direct farmer to consumer

The same process was used by Dr. Verghese Kurien from farmer to consumer with a systematic arrangement of collection, storage and retail of milk, this system can be introduced in all agriculture products and other products

Unfortunately its the middle man will lose the gain (Most of the Politician) as mass percentage of profit is gained by the middle man which makes the products costlier

If the politicians think's to stop Foreign Direct Investment at-least why not Direct Investment

Finally its the public who suffers and when the time of VOTE comes we see parties and not the Developments of our Society

    Finally Jai-Hind

This is the best ever decision to allow FDI in retail!! It will be extremely beneficial for the aam-aadmi and the producer! It will improve quality, reduce prices drastically, and generate tremendous employment oppurtunities in various sectors connected with retailing!!

The big losers will be the "Dalals" (middlemen/brokers) who siphon of the maximum profits, are not accountable, do not pay taxes, and manipulate prices!!Also, the corrupt law enforcers who get a share in this!! I think they should not have any grouse since they have earned their millions after so many years of "dalalli" and exploiting the poor and the aam aadmi!

It is a shame that our state govt. which boasts of doing so much for the common man is throwing spanners in this?

The Govt. after a lot of dilly dallying is going great guns on the reform issue, which no doubt will create some increase in inflation during the formative time, but bring long time benefits to the common man and bring accountability, transperency, and parity in the system!! Govt. too will gain by regular reciept of taxes which till now the middlemen and traders were evading!!!!

Shame on the BJP Govt. for taking an anti common man policy!!

It is a common trend in India whatever ruling party implement severly critisizing by opposition Parties.....They don't even see positive or negative impact of the decision. Just critisize and that is what they are paid for...Take a example from USA, when country comes they will forget everything and they will unite together for the betterment of the country.....When our leaders will learn from them? Don't waste the Tax payers money in the Drain because of your dirty Politics..I know by the end of the day you will be seen together in the parties or invited each other or celebrate the success by gaining only on your personnel accounts...

Dont worry, Mangalore will not have Wallmart or other foreign biggys, because FDI is allowed only in Cities having Population of 10 lakhs and above. In Karnataka except Bengaluru no other city is officially having Population above 10 lakhs, not even HUbli or Mysore, leave aside Mangalore (2011 census figures are not yet officially out).
As regards Karnataka Govt not allowing FDI in Retail, please wait and watch till the Agents of Wallmart & others contact our BJP leaders and asks for their SWISS BANK a/c number !

All the Asean countries have benefited by the FDI. See the Tesco,Wall marts in china. The wall mart is buying every spice and vegetable directly from the farmers. The farmers have a bargain power and thus farmers never suffer.
See the example of Thailand,Malaysia and Indonesia. Even the pork, chicken, and fish is sold at a cheaper price than the conventional retail market.
The idea of FDI will give competitive prices for the farmers.Every grocery and spices item will become cheaper. They will compete with the present super markets and thus trade margins will be reduced and it is a ultimate benefit for the consumers. To understand this equation you need education and knowledge. The local political leaders,MLA,MP’s and opposition leaders either less educated or do not want to share the secret to the people because they have no other agenda but to oppose it for the sake of opposing every policy of UPA.

I bet you dont buy all your groceries in Dubai from local shops by paying a few dhirams more. Dont tell me you are naive to hyper markets.
It doesnt matter if the state is averse to FDI as of now. Walmart has already said that they need at least 18 months to set up thier first outlet, by which time who knows the state of BJP. The very people who vandalised the first KFC outlet in Bangalore are today licking thier fingers dipped in chicken. I wont be surprised if the first wallmart outlet is set up in Gujarat and inaugurated by Modi himself.

A very good decision by State Government to stop us to sell ourselves in the hands of foreigners. Not only our Farmers will lose market for their agricultural products they even lose their land under Compulsory Acquisition Act to accommodate huge Foreign Retail Sectors too. What we need now is good market for our own agricultural products but not big mall to swindle Indian money to foreign country.

The beauty about FDI is that it will cut off the middlemen/ agents etc ! So you would get things cheaper.e.g.: Tomato's in Channarayapatna / Kunigal is Rs 1.50/kg.When it reaches Mangalore market stalls it is Rs 25/-. Even if one has to calculate Rs 3/kg as transportation Rs 2 per kg for loading / unloading, Rs 3 per kg as vendors retail profit per kg, who is making the rest of the bucks ? It is the vegetable wholesalers in Mangalore / middlemen etc.The local police / politicians etc will lose their mamool.Trucks are not supposed to unload any goods after 7am in the market area due to traffic congestion. But one often see's this happenning because the cop's are paid.unloading early in the morning the coolies have to be paid more !
